What do you mean by "systems"?

IT systems or more like general processes?

General processes. Basically, if you wanted to start a business tomorrow, what books would you read to help you set up the infrastructure?

Totally depends upon the business. I started my business last fall. I have read Zero to One, Profit First, Good to Great.

You also need to talk to an accountant and attorney before opening the doors.

Talk to someone who has opened a business in your field. They have the best advise on what systems you need. I talked to a mentor that opened a similar business a couple years ahead of me. I copied a lot of what he did. Made my start up a lot smoother. Learn from others mistakes anytime you can.

I read Rich Dad Poor Dad and am going through Cashflow Quadrant right now in addition to some real estate books. I realized that my knowledge and vocabulary are pretty limited to my experiences as an employee/self employed small business.

So I'm really just trying to get an overall grasp of terms, concepts, etc. to expose myself to it.

Simple numbers, Strait Talk, big profits by Greg Crabtree was recommended on here recently and I listened to it. I really enjoyed it and wish I had read it earlier in my business.

Small business associations can help give ideas as well

I run on EOS (the system described in the book) and love it. I think it's awesome for their target market (10-250 employees, entrepreneurial, privately owned). If you're just starting out the system isn't the best fit but still a great read.

The E-Myth Revisited
Good book for people just starting out with no employees yet.

Simple Numbers, Straight Talk, Big Profits
Geared toward the $1MM-$5MM revenue type company but a great read for any small business owner.

Scaling Up
Also more for established companies looking to grow to the next level but a great read.

The Great Game of Business
Good combo of numbers focus and broader system focus.

Its a great strategy book; taught me how to evaluate clients.

Another piece of advice: figure out how much cash you need to get going, then double it.
