4.8 % interest. I haven't looked in a while but where can you get that and also have it insured?

I just bought a couple CDs around 5.2 - 5.3% interest today. Insurance is limited to FDIC so you'd have to spread the CDs around.

Who can live off $12K a month?

You guys are such unimaginative losers.

Wait until the S&P gets to 4200, then put it all in UPRO that you sell half at 4500 and the remainder at 4800.

ps for the Karens in this thread. I am obviously not really calling anyone a loser. I mean it in a loving way.

I know what I would want to do. It's just hard not to do something more responsible to ensure growth.

I'd want to buy 4 or 5 properties across the country that I could rent out. Rotate through them spending a couple weeks at a time at each. Find an individual contributor job I could do remote and live vacation life.

Too late - you know Karen's still can't take jokes even after one admits said statement is a joke.

1 mil on undeveloped property.
750k adding a house / developing the ranch.
250k on awesome vacations around the world with family.
1 mil balanced investments, half diversified stocky stuff and half in more creative higher risk reward stuff.

Make a million on sale of ranch after living on it a few years, then do it again on a larger scale.

I'd put it all on WWR at $0.84/ share, ride it up to $1.50 and sell when it drops back to $0.80. Then go back to work.

If it was up to me... I'd move to small community where I can buy a brand new house that is huge for $600-700k and live comfortably in that town. My wife would push me to move closer into the city where the money wouldn't go as far and I would be surrounded by high earners and have to keep my job plus supplement my income from the remainder of the windfall just to keep up with the Jones.

Get that house and get your wife a small apartment in the city.

Win-win.

I'd probably use most of it towards real estate - multiple multifamily options. I'd keep some cash reserves to fall back on supporting it, etc. If i didn't retire after getting that all setup, I'd definitely at least change careers to something less stressful.

First and foremost, I'd acquire minimum of 10BTC and the guidance to cold storage and setup inheritances/multi-sig/etc wallets.

Then whatever anyone else says with the rest.

I may be a simpleton but having aquired $3mm, you can earn $150k a year at 5% guaranteed interest. I would probably actually do the opposite of most and cut my expenses even further and never so much have a care in the world.

Take that, get a simple job for additional salary and maybe benefits and live a good life. My number is higher but running that way.

I would pack my bags and go traveling around the world.
Would still work for my company probably and lead few main clients on Microsoft teams whatsapp, cause that is not complicated and doesn't take much of my efforts. Of course i would do it just for fun and in order to have some structure of the day.

  • Quit my job.
  • Use the cash to build our modest barndominium on the land we purchased a few months ago.
  • Invest the remaining ~$2.8 mil and live off the interest for the next five years or so until our kids start school. Even 5% return would be sufficient.
  • Once the kids start school, the wife and I would resume work in a low stress field that we enjoy and allow us to take time off/vacation as desired.
  • Continue working until we hit $5mil or so (<10 years).
  • Comfortably retire at 40-45 and be in a position to set our kids up for early financial independence when we feel they are mature/responsible enough.

What are these unicorn "low stress jobs" that are being referenced that allow unlimited vacation? Working as a consultant or something?

Well, I image most people would be taking different views of jobs and decisions about jobs if you didn't need the money to pay your bills.

There was definitely a point in my career where it went from pressure to get highly rated and promoted to stress across the board. For me, going back to an individual contributor not trying to impress people or get promoted would definitely be a lot less stress.

Entirely different game from trying to be the best overall to just not getting fired and meeting the job description minimum. Most of us could coast pretty easily and managers would be more than happy you weren't bucking for promotion.

If your goal isn't to work your way up the ladder or make a ton of money (since you already have it), there's plenty of jobs out there that offer decent benefits and good vacation time. If you're a competent employee, then taking off when you need to take off likely won't get too much push back... and if it does... well there's plenty of places to bounce to.

Don't really exist IMO. I think people are meaning jobs at Lowe's and similar but those suck too because your co-workers are complete morons. Have you seen the quality of person that works at those places now? It's no longer your Dad who has skills who can immediately direct you to what you need.

You could be an IC at a corporation and get good vacation and benefits but you would still have to tolerate a cesspool of crap.

You could potentially consult if you are an expert in your field. I did it for a couple of years and did not enjoy it. It was very flexible but also not that rewarding but that's just my opinion.

Many procurement or buyer jobs are remote these days. Mostly just managing inventory and shipments in. It can be repetitive, but not really stressful for a IC making $60K - $80K.

Office manager / business manager jobs are pretty much 9-5 and little stress.

Inside sales and account management roles would qualify.

There's plenty of mom and pop retail stores that are only open business hours. Being a manager there would be a good change of pace and have decent hours.

That's just off the top of my head.

I'd keep my job, but probably take it less seriously. Id go on a badass 50k vacation. Id pad my cash. I'd then take about 2.5MM and invest it in various real estate deals, aiming for 18-20% IRR. I'd probably roll all profits after tax back in until I get up 5MM. Then I would probably quit my job and live off of about half of that income and keep rolling half the profits and growing my principal.

I think you can find an IC job at a lot of companies and just do a slightly above average job which isn't too much and enjoy life.

I think with a role like that, you're not bringing home deal stress or stress of advancing up the corporate side as I guess you are largely covered. With that said, I would need to be closer to $7-8MM to go on coast mode.
