I dunno, I think you confuse how little work gets done in an office.
This. When I worked in the office half my coworkers were taking 2 hour lunch breaks, 30 minute Starbucks runs, online shopping throughout the day, chit chatting/gossiping all day, fantasy football, pointless meetings etc. Very little work was getting done.
Do you really think most these same people aren't taking 2 hour lunch breaks, 30 minute starbucks runs, online and in store shopping, calling to chit chat, etc. when they are working from home?
Sure, but the point is people slack off in the office just as they do from home. A bad employee is going to be a bad employee at home or in the office, the same goes for a good employee.

Bad (and average) employees are significantly worse from home.

Also, it's much more difficult to build new high performing talent and build a culture when everyone is remote. Not saying it's impossible, just harder. Bringing people back to work is the "easy button" and why we're seeing more and more of it.

For those of you who deal with remote workers, I have an employee who appears to have decided to take the rest of Friday off starting around 11am. She shows idols since then. No out of office, no note saying I have to step out, nothing. Some tasks were waiting on her this afternoon which she didn't do.

Employee is normally a good employee so I'm trying not to be an a-hole about it. But I am frustrated.

Is it bad for me to send a message now asking if she decided to take the day off? Or should I wait until Monday morning?

(Trying not to be my normal passive aggressive self)

The fact that we even need this discussion is insane.

There was a time when this was a fireable offense.

I have little sympathy for people not doing the job they are paid to do.

Especially when she didn't tell you she was taking off.

I consider that stealing.

It's never been a fireable offense for an otherwise high performing employee.

I'll give you real advice. You said they are normally a good employee. Let it go.
I agree with this advice. As a leader, you have to choose your battles, and this does not sound like a situation that warrants a fight. Maybe something subtle on Monday, like "you are always easy to reach and quick to respond - what happened to you? I got a bit worried we needed to send in the National Guard to find and rescue you?"

That's not leading. That response is passive aggressive.

Just ask if they were okay since they weren't responding, actually care about them being okay, and then let it go.
