About to start a new job that doesn't have employer health insurance - are there any decent options? Have two young kids so have to deal with constant doctor visits/checkups and probably more births in the near-ish future. Not particularly interested in the share-type programs that aren't true insurance, but are those the only reasonable options that aren't insane premiums or deductibles?

Is it possible to do a small business plan with just myself/family? I'll probably need the new plan in place by 2/1, so have some time to explore.

Contact a broker but in Texas you can only get ****ty HMO plans in the individual market post Obamacare. Small groups require that you have an unrelated employee. There are some limited term PPO options but if you are turned off by medishare limits you may also not like the (unlimited) out of pocket maximums on the short term plans and of course the zero coverage for out of network treatment with HMO plans. A lot of the short term PPO plans advertise limited of pocket maximums but they have unlimited OOP maximums for out of network docs…so what good is that if you are just looking for catastrophic coverage?

Bottom line the individual policy market was destroyed by Obamacare. Unfortunately outside of hiring an unrelated employee, in my humble opinion, medishare has the widest network of doctors/hospitals and the most robust coverage with your primary risk being the medishare group fails.

My wife and I are both self employed. We pay $850/mo for a terrible high deductible plan. The entire healthcare and insurance market is a complete racket.

Look into a medishare plan. My employer covers my personal health insurance, but family plans were expensive. We've used Christian Healthcare Ministries for my wife and kids for several years now.

-Nevermind, I see where you said you aren't interested in those.

Every single year I have to get a new plan because the old plan is no longer offered. I've had 3 different companies in 3 years, and as a result go to the doctor a lot less because it's just an enormous pain in the ass now.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

We used Medishare for my wife maybe 7-8 years ago and found it inconvenient (but we just never had to use it). Is it more prevalent now? I feel like anytime we used it the receptionist had to go through some long process to figure out how to run it since it wasn't traditional insurance.

If it works, I remember the premiums weren't bad and the deductible was decent. I just know we actually use it pretty consistently now that we have the kiddos.

Our plan doesn't have a deductible, just a max out of pocket per visit, And you don't have to involve the provider in anything. You simply pay cash for any services provided and then you're reimbursed by the medishare. For example, when my son was born we received a $27k bill from the hospital, we called and got the cash price which was $2k (this is the real scam, all of these providers rip off the insurance companies, hence the high insurance premiums). We paid cash and then were reimbursed.

Oh that sounds pretty nice, what's the name of it? I'd like to look into that.

$2K all-in for a delivery? Sounds like you got the indigent price.

We paid 4x that 10 years ago. I need to have you negotiate my medical bills.

No, the indigent price is free if you show up at the hospital in Galveston.

Private insurance really sucks. I hope you took a massive pay raise to lose insurance especially with young kids and wanting maternity. I lost plan after plan and the rates were insane. Obamacare is such a beat down. I have horror stories from 5 years of it. And yes telling doctors and hospitals it's cash after the fact is cheaper, however you mention that before and they still try to get you.

Had a girl that worked with me who had two medical bills that she was paying on. One of them started at around $3k, the other around $5k. She paid on them, $50 to $75 here and there, as she could afford to. Had been paying on them for a few years. One day she was at the hospital to make her payment and they had a new administrator who overheard her conversation with the hospital employee as to how much she had left to pay. Seems like combined it was $4k or so. He pipes up that if she could pay $700 or $800, they would forgive the rest. She didn't have that amount of money available so said she would be back, came and borrowed it from me, and paid them. I thought it was crazy since they were getting every dime they were owed, but in payments.

A guy who was doing my peer review was talking to me about the health insurance his CPA firm had versus what I had (not a part of the review of course). He said he was switching to get on his wife's plan, there was some snag, and was without insurance for a couple of months. During that time, his son broke his leg or tore ligaments or something playing sports, took him to the emergency room, they asked for his insurance card and he said he didn't have insurance. She said the bill was going to be $5,000 or $6,000 or so and asked how he intended to pay for it and he said with a check if that's ok. She then said in that case, it will be $1,500 or some much lower amount. It's all insane.

Look into Revolt Healthcare. We just switched into this company for my wife's coverage. It has great coverage and is a PPO and a lot less expensive and better coverage than BCBS or any of the other large corporate insurers. You must qualify. If you have any major pre conditions t hey may turn you down. Saying that my wife had breast cancer 6 years ago and she was approved.

Cool, thanks for all the options. Sounds like I need to look into Revolt or Health Sharing.

What about a concierge doctor. You pay an annual fee and I believe your visits are covered;

My kids have a concierge pediatrician. We pay an annual fee (around $1,500 per kid) and pay additional fees for visits.

Maybe some are just flat annual fee, but that's not my experience.

None of this should be surprising. Of course they'll take much less if no insurance. And they're happy to give you a cheaper cash rate. Saves them having to deal with insurance reimbursement and/or chase down bills that may or may not ever be paid at all. And the ER can't turn you away.

If you're relatively healthy, it would be cheaper to have no insurance and pay negotiated cash prices... the majority of the time. The problem is in the unlikely event something unexpected/ catastrophic happens and you;re relegated to ****tier providers and/or treatment/meds you can't afford.

doesn't do much for you in the case of catastrophic illness.

Concierge is best as an add-on for traditional insurance, not a replacement.

Agreed. Just thought maybe a two pronged strategy might work.

We use a concierge as an add on to our medishare. It's a flat rate per month, unlimited visits. Since medishare has a max out of pocket per visit it just made since.

Medishare is part of a PPO network called PHCS. This is a very large network, which means Medishare is now widely accepted.

The advantage that you get is "negotiated" prices like a traditional insurance provider would get. Without this PPO network, you're essentially a "cash" customer and have to negotiate yourself, which can be a pain and/or stressful.

LostInLA07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
This looks like a cool option.

But for clarity this is an indemnity plan not a "PPO" even though they lease a network and pay a benefit even if out of network. However that's almost the same as how BCBS market some of their small group "PPO"' plans with unlimited out of pocket maximums.

This crap used to be so simple, freaking government interference has made it way too complicated and difficult for everyone to understand the exposure they truly have based on the plan type they select.

It is essentially a PPO .They have a very large network. In fact they will cover you out of the country. Have yet to not find a doctor that my wife uses. It is better than any Obama care HMO plan on the market and is lot more economical.

Anyone know if MD Anderson accepts medishare?
LostInLA07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yes it's very similar.

And of course light years better than the worthless Obamacare HMOs that no one accepts, which is all you can get on the "individual" market.

Government should get out of the way and let medishare programs buy reinsurance and operate like a level funded group plan. They would dominate the market.

TTTing this....

Anyone else used Revolt Healthcare or something similar? I'm looking to get my wife her own, affordable coverage and an indemnity plan seems like it makes sense for someone who doesn't utilize healthcare very much.
