Let's just say I hope you don't work for a large aerospace/defense company that makes fighter jets in the D/FW area.

Tech for sure is laying off. Mortgage lending already had BIG layoffs.

Big Box retailers like Best Buy and Walmart announced layoffs. Subscription type business like Peloton and HBO Max. Ford and Tesla announced big layoffs. So, lots of companies are laying people off. I imagine a lot of those are not filling open positions and calling that a layoff.

made me think of another quote... "there are two types of people in this world... those with loaded guns and those that dig." :-) this quote will mean a lot more in the near future as it applies to the workweek

i do remember some 'growth thinkers' in the early 2000's that tried so hard to convince me that ARM loans were the best thing ever and i would be an idiot to not do one... they were going to be the future of all mortgages... lol

you can still be a growth thinker but have the wisdom to know which paradigms really never shift

I think an ARM was a fantastic decision from 2007 to 2021.

Side bar, but I've got a good friend that's a peer in my industry. He bought a $2.5M home in Seattle on an interest only loan in 2012. I told him he was nuts. He told me he was right and to watch and learn. He knew real estate, I knew stocks.

Home skillet sold the house this year for 3X what he paid for it. He's on an interest only loan in Atlanta right now.

i knew some that benefited just like home skillet...not from the arm necessarily, but from the rise in value of the house... timing of the sale pretty important too... but also know of many more stories that didn't work out as planned

Like Toyota? The leading automotive manufacturer in the US by revenue in '21?

But go ahead and continue ignoring the hard facts. You don't know what you're talking about

But go ahead and continue ignoring the hard facts. You don't know what you're talking about
your original example was a US company using certain mgmt practices in japan that worked... US auto companies weren't able to duplicate the same manufacturing practices in america due to several reasons including the culture of the us vs japanese workforce.. it is a case study and the point that i was making

a good read about that culture: https://hbr.org/1981/07/why-japanese-factories-work

also, last i checked, toyota is still a company based in japan... if you want to know what the future of the american worker will look like... i'd look towards what is going on currently in china

but you maybe right that i don't know what i'm talking about... worked for small, medium and F500 companies in several industries... accurately predicted all of the recessions since 2000... and run a group of companies exceeding 100m in rev... go back to tik tock

Hope no one gets fired like I did one time. I was on a out of town training meeting and my boss called me and told me I was fired. Went back into the meeting picked up my stuff and headed to the airport. You could have heard a pin drop when I went in and told them. Everything worked out fine. Didn't like the t-sip anyway.

Let's see how the 4 day workweek trial in the UK works with more representation across industries.

You all asked to see studies with hard facts, I posted a study with hard facts done by the company with the highest market cap ever.
You're asserting Japan workers may be more driven than US workers, so they'll get their work done whether in a 4 day or 5 day workweek regardless.
I'm asserting Japan workers, culturally and generally, associate their self value with their work/appearance of work more than most other countries/cultures, so to implement a 4 day workweek test there would be hard to get buy in on but they were still able to and productivity boosted by 40% over their 5 day workweek norm.

Perhaps manufacturing will never be able to go to a 4 day workweek, but office workers can and that's where we're headed.

Good on you for managing organizations with multimillion dollar revenue streams. I have my own share of corporate experiences across industries, have turned million dollar products into billion dollar products, and studied at a top bschool.
Yet I still acknowledge I don't know everything so I turn to facts.
You're still disregarding facts and others' experiences. Your way isn't the only way.

we'll agree to disagree... time will tell and i'll keep this post bookmarked...

my advice to others that i know that are WFH, as the market softens is to get your butt back in the office, be visible and keep those blinders on...

one more piece of advice... at 7.5 posts a day... just remember that marketing goes first :-)

Yeah I plan on doing that on a separate device for most of the folks. Some of the people live in states which require all party consent which would be illegal & wouldn't hold up in court. But most of the people I'll be talking to, and myself, live in one party consent states.

do it like they do in "Hard Knocks"

ask them to bring the playbook, shake their hand, tell them you may rehire them if they clear waivers.

All I can say about Oracle is that they bought Cerner, who's EHR for the VA is not doing well.

And to make this on subject, I was laid off from the USN in Sep 1992. I think it was put out via message from the CNO, but I really don't remember.

Thank you very much for that Ben. That means a lot and I greatly appreciate it.

The notifications are over with. They were rough, emotional days to say the least.

I've recommended and sent some of my former folks' resumes to recruiters who have reached out. Hopefully they will find something soon.

Now the next fun part, trying to motivate the relatively few folks who are left to excel in a role which we are significantly understaffed for.

Lastly, the LinkedIn feed is pretty much filled solid #opentowork postings every time I open it. Urghh....

Whether you delivered the news or not, if you know someone who's been recently laid off, reach out to them and let them know how sorry you are for them, compliment them, and wish them the best. Many feel very alone at this point.

Have had to do this multiple times, including a month ago

Our script is usually:
1) very high level context of what is happening company-wise (ie the company is operating in a challenging and fast-changing environment, and related to that, the company is making some moves to transform). Basically bull**** jargon but necessary to make it clear it's a company restructuring/strategic move, not personal
2) inform their role is being eliminated
3) timing - done now or a future date
3) express that this was not about their performance. Thank them for what they did. Here's a chance to sincerely thank them and try to build them up, but breifly
5) be empathetic but do not apologize. (It's unfortunate that this will impact you this way). Again, bull**** but you can't applogize
6) briefly cover terms of the severance at a super high level, but this is mostly left for them to review the package sent to them
7) offer chance for questions but know you can't get into how others are impacted. Let them know who can help with questions they may have later
8) if not fired that day, at least give them the rest of the day off to process

This was a fascinating thread. Thanks for all the input everyone. I am finally in a non-blue collar job and honestly this is a new world for me and good to gain insight.

I can speak to the loyalty thing though. I am glad I got the loyalty lesson early on in my life. Having a "company man" father who worked O&G his entire life was very eye opening. And then my own experiences as a gubment contractor. I love and appreciate my company now and bust my ass for them, but I don't think I can ever let myself think past what work truly is. Time and service in return for payment and growth. It is business, first and foremost. And having been through double digit near death experiences at this point….my interests for me and mine will always come first now. I truly think that is a respectable and reasonable approach to life.
