How?

Put everything possible on it. Spend heavily. Eat out a lot. And kids are expensive (travel ball, tutoring, music lessons). Have full season tickets to Padres. Probably spend $200 at each game. Go to a lot of concerts.

Gmail is trash. I've been using it for about 6 weeks at new job. It's one of the more poorly designed email apps I've ever used because of the little things it can't do natively that Outlook has done for 20 years.

It's unreal how dumb it is.

I love these statements...can you list specifically what Outlook does that Gmail doesn't? And please do not respond if you are one of those people who CCs themselves on their sent emails so it all shows up in your inbox.

it's funny as I feel the exact opposite way, going from using Gmail for work for my first 10 years to now being on Outlook. I much prefer Gmail.

Like any software, I think it has a lot to do with what you become accustomed to.

Not surprisingly, I find search to be a lot more useful/intuitive on Gmail.

Certainly.

  • Gmail and Google Calendar are somehow, inexplicably, not integrated into one application, therefore i have to jump back and forth between apps whereas I do not have to do this with Outlook as it is fully integrated.
  • Incoming calendar appointments do not automatically tell me if I'm available or not, so I have to jump out of gmail and go look at Google Calendar to see if I'm available. See first bullet for what I presume causes this issue.
  • After accepting or declining appointments, the appointments do not automatically disappear. They just pile up in your inbox. Outlook automatically deletes the appt after you accept or decline it.
  • Inexplicably, there is no native "Unread" label/filter but there are numerous others I will never use. Unread is the most common filter anyone uses yet this application doesn't have it. I have to type "unread" into the Search bar and then select it after I type it. WTF?
  • If you are replying to a longer thread, it dumps your reply box to the very bottom of the thread thereby making you scroll to the bottom of the thread to get to your own f'ing reply so you can start typing. Ridiculously dumb. Now, there is a third party plugin to fix this by reverting the reply to the top of the thread that sort of fixes this but it sometimes doesn't work at all and sometime it only pulls you partially to the top. How that isn't native functionality is mind boggling

These are some of the stupid things I have found so far. On the other hand, I like Google Calendar quite a bit. It has some nifty features but if Google progressed to the 20th century and combined these apps maybe it would work better as a whole.

  • Google/Gmail not being "integrated"/"jumping back and forth"
  • Not sure what your definition of integrated is, but the side panel in Gmail allows for your calendar to be displayed in the same window as your email. Likewise, from your calendar if you need to email the attendees of a certain event, just click the event and then the email icon.
.
  • appointment availability - see above screen shot. The appointment request shows the Agenda for that appointment day. Note it shows meetingA and meeting B are at the same time.
  • Calendar accept - I would setup a filter to label appointment invites with a label, then once you have read it, just click the archive button on the mail. Once click and it removes it from the inbox, but keeps the custom label on it so you can find it later. A cluttered inbox is more about lack of using labels and filters than it is a feature shortcoming.
  • Unread list - would recommend you look at changing your gmail inbox to "Unread first" mode, since this is "the most common filter everyone uses" unless you're the type that keep large amounts of unreads in your inbox. This would allow you to maintain those as a priority. If you don't want to do that, you can - rather than type "is:unread" every time, is type that once, save it as a bookmark. Click the bookmark to get that list when you need it. It's one click.

  • Reply box issue - I don't see this behavior. Depending on which email in the thread you click, it just pops the reply box inline and I don't have to scroll. I believe this is because you might not be in conversational view. When in conversational view, lets say in a thread with 24 emails, if you reply to email #16, your reply shows below #16 and you don't have to scroll.

Integration
Aware of the web version of integration and use it. Was talking about mobile version where they aren't integrated. It's nonsensical the mobile apps aren't integrated like Outlook. BTW, noticed another dumb thing this time with calendar:

  • There is no way to forward an appointment to anyone. No shortcut or link is provided so I have to go find the appointment I've already accepted somewhere in my Inbox and forward from there. DUMB.

Availability
I see that now but I think that's not as efficient as Outlook which tells me outright I have a conflict so I know to resolve it. And then on mobile version there is no Agenda section so I have no idea if I have a conflict or not.

Calendar Accept
It's a feature shortcoming. Keeping invites are unnecessary and they should automatically be trashed or archived upon accept or decline. I've never had to go back and look at one in my entire career. Of course, now with Google, I need to keep them in case I need to go back and forward an appointment since I can't do that from the calendar appointment itself. This is a terrible CX.

Unread List
That is a partial solution. I don't want it be Unread mode 100% of the time and then to have to go Settings to change it back. I just want to be able to one click a button and just show my Unread email and then one click in back to full Inbox. This is a native feature that has been around since emails inception. Yahoo! email even has this feature. DUMB.

Reply Box
Without the add-in I'm talking about the Reply, Reply All, and Forward shortcut boxes default to end of the email which makes them useless. The add-in pulls them to the top so I don't have to scroll down before clicking. And even with that that add-in it doesn't load the cursor on my screen in an clear way to start your reply. It's janky as hell and I only know where my cursor is once I just randomly start typing and hope my reply is somewhere I can see it.

From the calendar, just add a guest/invitee to the appointment. It's pretty simple.

can't help with what you feel is efficient. There is certainly an "Agenda" section on the mobile google calendar app...and on the native iOS Calendar app. Not sure why you are looking at an agenda to tell you that you have a conflict.

Quote:

Then create a filter to remove them as soon as you get them. The event gets put on your calendar anyway and you can accept/decline from there. Saves you from having to "bounce back and forth", doesn't it?

Quote:

Right, agreed. Make a shortcut (its now one "button"). Once in this Unread view, click your Inbox again on the left (one click) and you are back to your full inbox. No difference in clicks.

Yes there are "shortcut boxes" at the bottom of the entire email. Did you know there are also buttons in the top right of each email so you don't have to scroll?

. same thing exists in the mobile gmail app.

63% of Americans living paycheck to paycheck. I'm sure the number is actually higher.

is there really a definition of "paycheck to paycheck" in these polls? seems to be up to interpretation.

the oft quoted article earlier in this thread, where the guy maxed out all his retirements and savings vehicles each month, but "had barely anything left over" is a good example. That ain't paycheck-to-paycheck.

No doubt most people are terrible at saving but these website surveys are typically garbage.

I was fear-mongered away from debt by my family at a young age. Of course, we were able to put me through TAMU at $2500 a semester without me having to take out loans, so that was a good start.

I drove a paid-for-vehicle to 250,000 miles, I saved, etc.

But it seemed like to me, prior to 2020 of course, those who leveraged themselves (maybe over-leveraged even), bought big homes, took big risks on stocks, did really well from basically 2014 to present.

We were scared off from buying a home that was going to cost us another $200,000 that would have served us for a longer period of time and debt was incredibly cheap vs long-term trends.

Everyone has their own level of debt tolerance and each needs to do what is best for them. But I think for most, some debt used responsibly and in meaningful ways can be quite beneficial. It's when people start overextending themselves that things can get out of hand quickly.

Yeah, to me "paycheck to paycheck" means if I miss a paycheck, bills stop getting paid on time.

Anything else is basically subject to how much money people keep in savings vs checking.

Saying somebody with 500k in savings and $500 in their checking account is living "paycheck to paycheck", but somebody with $10k in their checking account and $0 in savings isn't is silly. Haven't looked at the links, so I don't know how they're doing it.

The only debt I've ever had are a few car loans (that I've always paid off early) and mortgages (always one at a time).

I've just always been pretty risk averse, especially when I was in my 20s and 30s and had a young kid. And changed jobs twice.

Even when unemployed for a few months, I had more than enough to cover my expenses (for an extended period of time). But there was a fear that set in when there was no paycheck coming in.

As such, I probably have not invested like I should/could have, whether in real estate or the market.

I'm comfortable where I am now, but hindsight tells me there were missed opportunities. The upside is, I never over-extended myself, either. I guess this is all wisdom that comes with age.

Dude just make a rule pushing an accepted invite back to your inbox. It's literally worthless considering you have both a calendar and a deleted folder for the rare time you need what is only on the invite.

To get this back on topic, I played the safe route with virtually no debt and an absolute pile of cash. I lost. I'd have been better off going into massive debt 5 years ago.

FWIW my dad runs a fairly large bank. I've been looking at getting either a gently used or new truck now (old one has 300k miles on it and is an 08 and to put it nicely - it's very tired) and he told me that they're planning for a big wave of repo's in Q1 of next year, so I'll have to wait it out.
