Just curious......read an article about a dude that bought $5000 worth of bitcoin a while back, forgot about them and then cashed out for about $750K on one of the fist legs up...probably kicking himself now for not waiting.

One of my friends was paid $10k when it was 10 cents a Bitcoin. It got to 27 cents and he panicked and sold out.

He would have made an awful billionaire. Either he and all his friends would have died in epic ways, or he would have become Batman.

My neighbor used to work in SF in the 2011/2012 time frame.
He learned about Bitcoin & began mining on his work computer... said he'd get a bitcoin every 2-4 days.
There was a coffee place that accepted bitcoin, & since he didn't know what else to do with the useless virtual money, he bought coffee with it. After a while, it started taking longer to mine coins so he quit.
He didn't want to tell me how many coins he mined, but I figure it had to be at least 75.

I worked with an economist who bought some on a whim and then transferred them to a friend to pay for a night out of drinks, mostly as a joke. Five or so years later that friend used the Bitcoin to buy a house for himself and his new wife. The guy I worked with has regrets.

Not me but I went to Christmas with my in-laws 2018 ish and we're at my wife's aunts place.

Topic of Bitcoin comes up and the uncle is going on about how it's all bull crap and no one cares. One of his sons says it's not crap look it's up near 12k per coin. Then he turns to his brother and says, go ahead tell them about it, you know all about it.

Uncle asks him to tell him more and it comes out that he's been mining them since 2010. He's a real frugal guy and quiet but he didn't say much more than that.

I think I was the only one at the table that had an idea of the amount of coin that actually was. He showed up in a new Tesla that year. \_()_/

It is a fascinating thought experiment - at what point would you of sold out? Of course, the market cycles of BTC has allowed a reinvestment for great returns, albeit every market cycle is longer and the returns diminish.

It's almost like, how many times will you allow yourself to double up on black in roulette before you 'chicken out' and cash out. Yes, the analogy doesn't quite fit as holding assets is different than single instance outcome bets.

There's a texagger who bought 10 or 20k of bitcoin from me when my coinbase account allowed it and took weeks for his to get setup.

I was really jealous at the time.

I'm even more now.

He was gonna put it I'm a safe and forget it. So I hope he did and still is.

Are you a billionaire in BTC? I've always imagined you were. I hope you are.

Lost it all in 17 in a hemp farm boating accident.

In 2017 I was a wreck, up nearly 24/7 trying to trade coins and watching %'s and reading and trying to keep up with hype cycles and Elliot waves and it was a relief to sell it to buy into an even riskier proposition of a hemp farm..... to piss off my wife who wouldn't let me grow weed and thought bitcoin wasn't real.

Boy I showed somebody.

[When all your mentors, friends, family call you crazy for 8 years while you cannot stop thinking about a new tech... I'm rare that I didn't get divorced or request it or become a bitcoin hermit]

Well, that sucks but at least you got something out of it. Hemp is the future!

My wife knows nothing about BTC and is skeptical or I would have dumped about a $100K into it back when it was in the 30s.

It's just numbers on a ledger until you use it.

I've used my bitcoin almost every year since I started in the industry, for some purchase or another, usually especially on bitcoin black friday.

I had 5k of bitcoin back when it was 700-800 bucks... but didn't (and still don't) really understand what it is, so i quickly sold it and made a whole 100 dollars. Was pretty pumped at the time. Its just one of many investments that I owned at one point but let go of too early (Roku, Square, Tesla)...

Roughly 2006-2010 or so I had a lot of time on my hands and frequented 4chan a lot. This was roughly in between the Habbo Hotel raids and the "let's send Taylor Swift to perform at a school for the deaf" days. Anyway, bitcoin was being talked about a lot and I thought it was pretty cool that some dude bought a pizza from papa John's for like 30 bitcoin or whatever but that was about it. I really hate to see what I could have had if even if I'd some some simple mining back then.

I have a friend/former co-worker that got in early, held on, and then cashed out in the January run-up. I don't know the exact number, but it had to be in the $3-5 million range. Retired from his VP Finance job with a Fortune 500 and moved to Colorado to live a life of leisure. 47 years old. He was always that very investment savvy guy that, if I had to guess 10-15 years ago which of my friends would hit something big and make a mint, it would be him

On May 22, 2010, now known as Bitcoin Pizza Day, Laszlo Hanyecz agreed to pay 10,000 Bitcoins for two delivered Papa John's pizzas. Organized on bitcointalk forum, the Florida man reached out for help. "I'll pay 10,000 bitcoins for a couple of pizzas.. like maybe 2 large ones so I have some left over for the next day," Hanyecz wrote.

Brother had a ton of it from the early days. Got it as prizes for online gaming tournaments.

Sold all of it to pay off student loans, vehicle, etc.

He regrets it, but it was a good use to set him up for the future.

Jesus. Obviously time has not been kind to my memory but I remember thinking "hey I bet I could set up some mining bs running in the background like the old SETI Screensaver thing" but then got distracted by a vote to name the new mountain dew "hitler did nothing wrong" or something.

Well...if your luck is anything like mine you would have gone full bore and it would have tanked.

I came close to taking a $50K position in NVAX back in March of '20 at around $4/ps. That would have paid off nicely but i rationalize it by saying that if i had taken the position it would be $0.30 right now. Seriously considering taking the nickname O'fer because I'm about O for 10 right now on things I could have done but didn't.

It all started way back in 2002 when War Emblem was going for the triple crown in the Belmont Stakes. I toyed with the idea of putting $1000 on the longest shot in the field (Sarava @ 70 to 1) just for sh.ts and gigles. I decided not to and ......well.......guess who won? I think maybe I'm just snake bit....lol

You have to stage your sales. Sell enough to cover the investment. Then sell enough to cover a vacation or a car. Then sell enough to cover a year of income or college for your kids. Then enough to retire. Finally, sell enough to set up a few generations of your family, or to set up a foundation for giving money away, etc.

There's someone out there who put $7K in SHIB and now has several billion $. IDK how you let it go that far when you could bleed out $1,000,000/day without crashing the market. I guess people just don't know how to manage their greed. It's a universal human trait.

I took a number theory class my senior year at A&M in 2009. My final paper was on encryption techniques for digital currencies that were backed by a government, but still maintained anonymity for the users. Of course, it was literally right as bitcoin was introduced, so I was very interested in it, but couldn't see the value since it wasn't backed by a government. Easily could have picked it up for free at the time.

I didn't understand it then and still have questions now. The main thing is that everyone's having fun, though.
