Even by the turbo-charged standards of Silicon Valley, the three-day surge in the fortune of Anthony Wood has been meteoric.

The chief executive officer and founder of Roku Inc., a maker of home streaming devices, added $652 million to his net worth since the company reported third-quarter results on Wednesday, giving the technology industry's latest billionaire a $1.07 billion fortune, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Shares of Roku have more than doubled since the earnings report, its first as a public company, as revenue and active users surged. The gains continued Monday after Roku announced a nationwide discount on its streaming stick ahead of Black Friday, with the stock advancing 28 percent to close at $42.71.

My parents' Samsung did not have WatchESPN when they first bought it, but it does now. You may just need to run an update?

My Roku interface is better than my smart TVs app, and it has more channels, and the channels are updated more frequently, and you can search for content across all channels to find the best option for viewing a show or movie, and it can be controlled via Wifi by my phone app, and I can use a keyboard on the phone app to type shows instead of using the keyboard on the TV screen, and I can take it with me and use my subscriptions on other TVs.

Cons, it's a little l**** running Sling.

I bought 3 Roku's last week when I made the decision to "cut the cord".

You're welcome shareholders.

Roku has a better interface, wifi, and functionality than any smart TV I've ever tried. I have two Roku sticks and a Roku box in my house. Love the product.

I expect Netflix, Apple, Google or Amazon to acquire Roku in the near future.

Absolutely. There is no way that tech sits out there too long.

Netflix is the most likely of those I think. Everyone else already has their own interface and devices.
Apple- Apple TV
Google- Chromecast
Amazon- Fire Stick/TV

Agreed, but from reports Roku has the best platform and is signing numerous deals with more tv manufacturers. They're relatively cheap by tech standards and are primed for a buyout. Hell, Apple paid 3 billion for Beats for goodness sake. I'd bet more people use Roku now compared to the number of people that used Beats when they were acquired.

I could also see AT&T or Comcast buying Roku as a counterweight to the losses caused by "cord cutters".

AT&T has enough on their plate trying to fix the Time Warner debacle.

Four years ago I bought my first Roku and thought it was great. I have used various models, including a Roku TV which is my main TV in the house. However, as more people buy smart TV's, I don't really see a place for Roku.

My parents bought an inexpensive Samsung tv last year and it has most of the main channels that are available on Roku. As everyone points out, there is plenty of competition from Apple TV, Google Chromecast, and Amazon Fire TV, but I don't even see this as going to matter in the long run. Streaming software can easily be included within a TV and the need for a separate streaming device will not last long.

In my mind, Roku's only leg to stand on in the future will be licensing their software to lower-end TV companies as they have already done (TCL, Philips, Hisense, Insignia, etc.), but I don't see this continuing for very long as TV manufacturers begin developing their own software/apps.

But did you buy the stock last month?

Nope. If it IPO'ed a year or two ago, I would have, but not now.

TV manufacturers attempting their own proprietary smart TV solutions has played right into ROKU's hands. Poor support, updating, and execution.
