How long do you want to ignore this user?
I recently got some quotes to change our auto/home insurance from Germania to USAA. The initial quote I got was substantially higher than what I'm paying now. Does anyone here work for USAA that can verify the quote to ensure I'm not getting raked over the coals here?

For example, I asked about an additional 20K gun rider policy, I was quoted about $913 year. Thanks for the help in advance!

LOL...you're just now finding out that USAA charges their members crazy high rates. They realize their members love them and they charge them whatever they want...and for some reason they pay it.

disclosure: I bank at USAA and am a former USAA insurance member. Their investment/financial planning sucks which shows in the rankings (bottom ten).

put me in the exact same camp as above. Moved all my insurance from them (to state farm no less, which also has highish rates)and saved. Still bank with them though. There is a lot of love for this company and I was always one of them but insurance rates were getting out of control.

I've got USAA, they are high.

Got a quote from Farmers last year and they were about the same.

I belive USAA does give you 10K on firearms where most other companies are 2k or so.

I do my banking with USAA. No HO or Auto insuarance. Those rates were through the roof.

However, I have a Valuable Personal Property policy that covers over 11K of a ring ($171 premium) and 6,250 in guns ($125 premium).

I carry everything with USAA. They've been extraordinarily helpful anytime I had a claim/question/problem.

That said I should probably shop around. But I don't want/need a cut rate provider with cut rate service.

I did a quick quote on State Farm's site and it was the same for the home policies we have. Not sure if we bundle auto if it will matter.

This thread got me interested in shopping rates, and I still may, but there may be a reason USAA is higher-priced. Often times you get what you pay for.

They're excluded from the rankings/award since they're open to select members, but the only other provider that had 5 stars across the board won the award.

Two homes, two cars, Farmers quote was about the same price as USAA and the coverage was a little less. Next.

USAA may be more expensive than some but need to factor in the subscriber account check you get each year, just got one for almost $1,000.

Wait a second. How did you get that much? I've been with them for a decade and never got anything over 70 bucks. I've had both my home and car insured through them.

I guess you have to be on the verge (always on the verge but not quite ever getting there.....) of being old.

I've been a member since ----hate to say it---1968.

Plus, insurance living on an island in a "tropical paradise" is stupid expensive.

As I’m shopping around, the AARP RV insurance companies are looking really good. The Hartford insurance company supplies insurance to the AARP at discounted rates for seniors so that seems like a really good deal.

You should call and ask for a lower rate.. I pay half that for more coverage on my wife's ring and my music gear. Obviously different items have premiums, as seen below.

also, I have a buddy that worked for farmer insurance, he was trying to get me to get auto insurance through him, I said I have USAA, he pretty much said, oh never mind. He couldn't match them. So I don't know where yall are getting off thinking they charge higher rates for auto ins. Wife and I pay about $750 for 6 months for two cars, pretty decent coverage with $500 deductibles. Couldn't imagine full coverage car insurance being much lower than $60/mo.

I called Liere, and they were able to move me from State Farm and save about 35% for the same coverage. It's worth looking around if you are like me and just automatically renewed your policy every 6 months.

Gieco saved me $800 on home/auto combo..from Farm Bureau...USAA was not even close to FB.

Farmers saved me quite a bit when I switched from Geico about a year ago. I gave USAA a shot at the time, but they could not touch the current rate. I am paying $524 for 6 months with a $250 deductible (collision) through Farmers. This is for 2 cars.

I highly recommend Adam Koch, my Farmers agent.

On ALL insurances, check your "Exclusions"...sometimes hard to read legal crap, but the difference in rates may be hidden in that area.

The jewelry coverage you have listed is different than what KW02 is talking about. The typical rate for most companies in regard to "scheduled" jewelry is around $1.50 to $2.00 for every $100 of coverage. "Blanket" coverage is around $1.00 to $1.20 per $100. The difference is that "blanket" lumps all jewelry together as one limit with a max per item at $1,000 to $2,500 depending on the carrier; sometime more or less. "Scheduled" means you are insuring a particular item such as a wedding ring, Aggie ring...etc. Scheduling the item also will add mysterious disappearance while the blanket coverage will not. If you purchased the listed additional coverage for your wife's ring only, I would call first thing Monday morning to make sure that they have it covered correctly.

Not to disparage your Farmers friend but if he did not attempt to quote it, he has no idea. Price wise, USAA has been very good historically but that is not a universal truth. I would say that at least 30% of the time when I compete against a current client of USAA, I pretty handily beat there premium with same or better coverage, 25% it's about the same and the remaining 45% they beat the pants off of me. If homeowners is in the mix, It's pretty much always a win for me.

~$60 per vehicle is a good premium but I have clients paying much less. This is for $500/$500/$100, matching UM, $10,000 PIP, $500 deductibles, towing and rental reimb. Granted it needs to be a perfect storm of location, credit score, and discounts to get there but I have quite a few at that level.

The only reason I have USAA is because they insure Great Danes on my Home Owner's policy. The last 2 companies actually sent out a rep at random to do a survey before quoting.

If anyone knows of other companies that will insure a dog of that size, please let me know.

Reloadag, interesting point you bring up (blanket vs. scheduled). When I signed up for the jewelry insurance, I told them it was specifically for wedding ring and my aggie ring, so I'm def. going to check on that tomorrow. I see now when i log in, the musical instrument section has a list of gear, but the jewelry does not.
Of course, the real value in her wedding ring can't be insured anyway, it was my grandma's, it's from the 30s.

Don't buy a house through USAA. Terrible experience for me and I've heard similar from friends.

Even after reading plenty of bad online reviews I went with USAA to buy house anyway, just because they had given me such great auto insurance service for many years. Mistake.

After reading this I'm now going to check for cheaper rates.

i've def. heard mixed reviews of usaa mortgage. We used them, had no problems at all. Had nothing to compare it to however, but it seemed pretty seamless to me.

I use USAA for banking and stable low-risk investments.

For insurances and growth funds, I shop around elsewhere.

Now that USAA has opened up membership to just about everyone, they have grown too fast to keep up the service they were famous for. I'm still with them because the price for all the insurance was better than any other quote I got. As soon as I find a better price, I'm leaving USAA.

Old Army has a point that is not obvious ... in the past USAA had a select membership. A very select membership that allowed low rates and great service, but the membership has not been selective for a long time.

Couple points to make:

1) There are 28k+ employees at USAA and a very large number of contractors. While there are many people here that know what they're doing, there are quite a few that need help. It's like that with any large company. But everyone within USAA is very courteous and the service on the phone is some of the best I have seen. Which leads me to my next point...

2) The mortgage division is not really part of USAA. While it may be held at USAA, it is serviced by other institutions (GMAC, WF, etc.) Even I have noticed, when I transfer people to the mortgage division and give the new associate a rundown on what's going on, it's OBVIOUS that they aren't USAA employees. From the tone of their voice to the way they interact, they don't embody the culture at all. I'm not surprised at the displeasure with the mortgage department and believe me when I say that it's something that is being evaluated heavily in 2012.

3) You can complain about the membership growth, but the facts are that we strive to be a company that is centered around the military and their families. While anyone can get banking and investment products with USAA, P&C has limited membership availability. In the past, it was only open to officers of the military and not only that...you had to enroll while you were in the service. Once you separated your enrollment period was over. USAA shouldn't be limited to certain segments of the military.

Can someone beat us on price...absolutely. If that's the only thing that drives your decision then know that there will always...ALWAYS...be someone that will knock a few bucks off to get your business. One thing I know about USAA is that when the **** hits the fan, they step up and I've seen it happen again and again.

You can say I drink the company kool-aid. I probably do. But being on the inside and seeing the impact that is made with the members and knowing the care that goes in to every interaction, I'm 100% confident that the number of bad stories don't come anywhere near the good. They just get mentioned every time something negative happens.

investorAg83 - I can tell you for a fact that USAA service has gone to hell. Over the last 5 years, I have had to deal with people yelling at me that I needed to find my own attorney because my full coverage auto policy didn't cover being hit by another driver (it did). I have been accused of fabricating an accident so USAA could avoid paying an $800 supplement to finish fixing something they had already agreed to fix. Only after I threatened to take it to the Texas insurance regulator did they assign another investigator and see that the first had fabricated most of the things in his report. I even had someone in the subrogation department tell me I would have to sign away my right to sue the other (at-fault) driver for things other than property damage that were not covered under my policy; he told me my policy could be canceled if I refused to sign.

Sure, you can say that the majority of USAA employees are top-notch, but I would argue that that is the employees that have been there a while. The different things I have dealt with recently prove to me that there was a culture change at USAA. I still have insurance with USAA because of the cost, I am just prepared now that I will get terrible service.
