Would love to trade emails with Ags located in Singapore. My wife and I will be moving abroad in Jan./Feb. 2013 and we are looking for as much advice as we can get. Email me at codydcook(at)gmail(dot)com. Thanks!

Hope you get well compensated for the higher cost of living. Went to Singapore the other week, they tax the crap out of you but it is defintely one of the cleanest cities I've ever seen. Have no advice for living since I wasn't there very long.

Full ex-pat or some type of hybrid offer?

Not sure what the difference is but I would guess full expat package. Company pays for housing, tax equalization and preparation, transportation allowance, and cost of living adjustment along with relocation costs. Is that what you mean?

Yep, sounds like you are getting a full ex-pat deal. Good thing because cost of living here is pretty high. I've been here almost three years now, it isn't home but it isn't Nigeria either.

If you don't mind, would you send me an email at the address in the OP. I would like to bounce some questions off of you. Thanks!

It all depends on what your interests are. There is typically something for everyone in Singapore.

You have no idea what you are talking about. My girlfriend (not American) makes 6 figures and pays single digit tax rates.

For stuff in Singapore....

Little India

China Town

Marina Bay Sands, go to the bar on top - Ku De Ta

Sentosa

Night Safari

Go to a hawker center (Newton is tourist friendly, just be careful about ordering seafood, you can get scammed on weight). Better yet, go on a food tour. It's like 8 hours of eating.

Tour the Quays (pronounced Keys) - Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, and Robertson Quay.

Eat Chili Crab - Jumbo's or Red House are the best in my opinion. Order Mantou (bread rolls with your crab). Black or White pepper crab is also pretty good.

Grab a Singapore Sling at the Long Bar in Raffles Hotel / Visit Raffles Hotel

Take a Stroll down Orchard road.

Orchard Towers is always an eye opening experience for the uninitiated.

Electronics shopping at Funan center or Sim Lim. I'd avoid Sim Lim, unless you know exactly what you want and already have an idea of price.

Go to east coast park and walk along the beach. Tons of ships.

Go to one of the Nature reserves.

Night Golf at Marina Bay.

Go prawning at Bishan. It is basically catching fresh water shrimp on the smallest cane pole you have seen.

+1 million. I love prawning. Coincidentally, it's also one of the cheapest places to drink beer.

Moses, the 2 go hand in hand! Back tanks by the street, 6 dollar big bottles and some friends..... love me some Friday night prawning. Pan fried with garlic and onion when done and of course some more cold ones to wash it down.

Use AirAsia and take a flight to Kota Kinabalu in Borneo (Malaysian side) and climb Mt. Kinabalu over the weekend. Totally worth it.

Go to almost any nice hotel on either Saturday (or was it Sundays???) for "champagne brunch" and stay there 5 hours and drink 100 bottles of champagne while eating insane amounts of excellent food - - it's unbelievable and every expat from Britain seems to do this so you'll meet some interesting folks, too. At least I did back in the day...

Champagne brunch still exists and it is a fantastic way to waste away an afternoon. There are only a few that do the Saturday brunch (Dolce Vita at Marina Mandarin gets my vote) as Sunday is the usual brunch day.

Some even run a once a month special Sunday brunch where they serve Dom as the champagne of the day.
