I am taking two of my kids for a tour of the Colorado School of Mines the weekend before Thanksgiving (11/20-11/23).

We'd like to explore Golden (to see if my son would like to spend 4 years there) and Denver. I would love some recommendations for things we should do while we are there. I've just begun planning the trip, and the only thing on the books is a School of Mines event from 9-2 on Saturday.

Starting with the (possibly not so) obvious-several ski areas will be open-some are opening Halloween weekend. Also, if casinos are your thing, Blackhawk/Central city are about 30 minute drive west of Golden. There are also underground mine tours available. It is a beautiful drive-and several other easy drives up into the mountains are close. If you are at all interested in beer, Coors Brewery -the worlds largest brewery-offers a great tour, with a free visit to the tasting room at the end. Boulder is an easy 40 minute drive north of Golden. Denver has one of three US Mints- which offers tours, but look into it soon as they fill up. The State Capitol is Beautiful (and they offer free tours). We have a worldclass aquarium, and museums galore if that is your thing. I'd look into poking around Red Rocks Amphitheater-check and make sure there are no concerts. In addition to the stunning concert venue, there are lots of trails, and a cool trading post. This is about 20-30 minutes from Golden. The Buffalo Rose is a cool restaurant/live music venue in Downtown Golden. The main downtown is very walkable, with lots restaurants of all types. A couple of other favorites are the Table Mountain Grill and Cantina, and the Old Capitol Grill and Smokehouse. For a unique dining experience go downtown to the Buckhorn Exchange. MANY varieties of game meats-first liquor license in the State of Colorado and very historic decor.
I'm a Colorado native, happy to help more-message me if you'd like. Hope it is a great visit-we have several friends whose kids attended School of Mines and loved it!

We were in and near Golden in May of last year.
We had our two kids with us, aged 9 and 11.
It may seem odd, but the Coors brewery is actually quite family-friendly. Our kids really enjoyed it, and the adults get free beer. I came away from the tour really appreciating the history and the process more.
Golden itself is very walkable, with lots of places to see and eateries downtown.

I agree the area around Blackhawk is beautiful if you have time outside of Golden.

We hiked up St. Mary's Glacier, not an "easy" hike, but we did it again, family and kids in tow, without difficulty. Really pretty up there.

Idaho Springs is also a cool little town to spend a day in. We went whitewater rafting.

I had assumed it would be too early in the season to go skiing. We have never been skiing before. I know that one of my kids, maybe both of them, would love to try it. Is it unreasonable for me to hope that we can fit a day of skiing in? Honestly, a few hours would be great. We would have to rent literally everything. My son is 6'4".

If so, what would be the most convenient ski areas nearest Golden? I looked it up, and Loveland came up as being the most convenient.

Straight talk: this is a bad idea. The snow will be terrible if not non existent, and your first day skiing is typically not a fun one. Play the long game: if your kid goes to Mines you'll have plenty of time to go skiing. Go for a hike instead.

For the same or less money, go to the Broncos - Raiders game on Sunday or find a good local campus sports bar or restaurant to watch - that's what everyone else in town will be doing.

Too early to tell if skiing would be an option-keep it as an option if conditions are good. Loveland is a good place for beginners, and they are opening Nov 6. If there is a lot of snow by the time of your trip, you can get lessons and rentals right there at the ski area and have a great time. If there has been minimal snow-skip it and check out Idaho Springs, Georgetown or one of the other mountain towns.

I talked to someone up there. She said to call about two weeks before our trip and they'll have a better idea. She said the weekend that we there is actually their opening weekend.

You will have to wait and see about skiing. They are trying to get places open right now. By your trip, things might be fine but you'll want your first experience to be on good snow.

Loveland has a dedicated area for beginners called Loveland Valley. And it is relatively cheap. But it's a bit of a no frills experience. Keystone is nearby and has more of a base area experience. Unless the pass is closed, you can drive up to the top of Loveland Pass and take a photo at the continental divide and maybe hike a short bit. Or you pay and take the time to get to Breckenridge for a big resort experience. And Breckenridge town is great.

Honestly, the calculus for Mines is pretty strait-forward. Assuming it has the right program and is within the budget and they like the campus/facilities itself and size of the school, do your kids like the outdoors? If they do, great. If not, they will probably start to wonder why they're in Golden, Colorado.

Denver is there and has all the big city stuff but it's not like they'll be driving in after class all the time.

I'd go for a hike. I'd rent bikes and go for a ride on one of the paths.

Where are y'all from? Have your kids been to an NHL game? See if the Avs are in town during your trip.

Are they into history? Sports? Music?

Are you ready to take them to a brewery for a beer? Lots of good breweries with outdoor space to enjoy the cool late Fall weather.

Is there anything going on at Red Rocks amphitheater? It's just down the road from Golden.

Silly question, I can either stay in a Hilton hotel on the outskirts of Golden or in an Airbnb right smack dab in the middle of town. Is it worth paying extra to stay right in golden? The hotels are only about 10 minutes further away.

Are you referring to the Hampton Inn?

There are two Hampton Inn options, Denver West/Golden and Wheat Ridge, and a Home 2 Suites, Wheat Ridge.

I would recommend staying near downtown, so you can walk straight from the place around town. Don't think the hotels you are looking at will add much to the experience of the trip.

Coors brewery and Buffalo Bill's (supposed) grave... at least that was my itinerary back when we would go to the CU game back in the day.
