Do any Aggies have experience on flying on Turkish airlines from IAH to Asia?

Flew from Houston to Istanbul last Nov.
Their staff (at counter and on plane) was great, the flight was comfortable.
No complaints.

Will be doing it again in Dec, using TA again.

Have also flown them to IST in J, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Flew business class Houston to Istanbul, and it was great. Lounge when you get to Istanbul is fantastic too.

In 2022, they had a golf simulator in the IST business class lounge! Pretty cool!

Turkish is a nice step up from the US airlines...but admittedly that is a low bar. A lot depends on which plane you get as the 787s are pretty nice, but the 777s can be a bit worse layout...talking business class.

We used to fly them exclusively to the middle east before United started their newark to dubai route and always loved them. Service is great and the lounge at the airport is one of the better ones.

One thing we always took advantage of is they are on of the few airlines that has the extended stay package if you have a long lay over or want to stay a couple of days in Istanbul. They will pay for either one or two nights in the city depending on your ticket.

Stopover

Basically every trip we would fly houston to istanbul, stay two days and then continue on to Abu Dhabi.

I've flown the IAH - IST route as a gateway to Europe before. This was at a point where the USD had just gained serious strength against the Turkish Lira so we got our seats at a pretty steep discount compared to what we would have paid a domestic carrier. Business class product was better than US flagged carriers. IST lounge was amazing. Domestic Turkish flights were nothing to complain about.

I've thought about this, but the trip is so much longer than connecting through the US or within Europe proper. Is the cost savings worth it for the longer flight time?

Istanbul is one of the best cities on the planet. Any chance you can get to spend a couple nights in Istanbul you should definitely take it. And you can get to more destinations from IST on Turkish than another other airport so its easy to get to Europe, ME, Africa, etc. And IST is a huge and well organized airport.

I keep seeing dirt cheap tickets, but they have a long layover in IST.

I don't feel like a 32 hour travel time to save $200.

If you have about 7 hr layover or more then you can easily leave the airport and spend 3-4 hours in Istanbul seeing the sights and get back in time for your flight. It really is a bucket list city to visit.

I quoted Turkish for Texagers last week and I thought the prices were insane. Normally IAH-IST was like $800 for economy (and I've seen less). Prices for next May was $2052 with seat selection for economy. That's nuts. Business was $5700-$6500. This is flying back from Kayseri, but roundtrip IST wasn't much better. Dallas was a little cheaper.

I just booked all my flights for next summer on Turkish Airlines because they had some excellent prices. I am flying Bangkok to Rome, then Palermo to Houston, and finally Houston back to Bangkok (all via Istanbul). All in was around $1,500 USD...a fraction of the US carriers for the same combination of flights.

Yes but that was with the extended layover in IST. Spend at least a few nights there if you can. The city is amazing (and generally pretty cheap). And make sure to build in a good amount of time to just take in the Turkish lounge. It's a sight to behold.

If we're going over now, we usually go direct to Europe because of time constraints.

Taking Turkish airlines out of IAH, can you still use clear + security lane?

It depends more on the terminal than the airline. Terminal D at IAH doesn't offer a Clear lane. So you'd have to drop your bags at D, take the under ground tram to another terminal to go through it and then transfer back on the sky way.

If it's out of E, then you'd be fine.

Drop your bags at the Turkish air counter in terminal d, then take the elevator or escalator down to a tunnel walkway that will direct you to terminal E. You will not need to take the underground subway/tran.
