Not a frequent poster on this forum but wanted to pass this along as it popped up on my TripIt alerts and affects most people.

What are the current rules for flying with power banks?
Let's start with what you need to know about the rules currently in effect. The IATA, i.e., the main global trade association for airlines, sets rules and guidelines for commercial passenger flights.

Their rules state that power banks:

  • Must be in your carry-on luggage only. They should never be in your checked bag.
  • Should be under 100 watt-hours (Wh), otherwise they require special approval from your airline.
  • That are 100-160 Wh might be allowed, but typically require airline pre-approval.
  • Over 160 Wh are not allowed on passenger flights.

That said, some airlines enforce stricter rules when it comes to flying with power banks. For example, American Airlines limits passengers to two power banks and they cannot be larger than 100 Wh. They cannot be placed in checked luggage nor stored in an overhead bin. If you're using one, it needs to be visible and/or kept in an easily accessible place (such as your seatback pocket). You also cannot plug the power bank into the plane's power outlet to recharge it.

Many global carriers have stricter rules, as well. Emirates allows passengers to bring just one power bank onboard, it must be under 100 Wh, and the capacity marking must be clearly visible. You're not allowed, however, to use it to charge your phone or recharge it on the plane. It has to remain under your seat or in the seat pocket; it cannot be placed in the overhead bin.

I've noticed them mention not putting them in the overhead. I'm sure that's ignored alot. Also problematic if you are in a seat with no under seat storage.

100 wh is pretty big though

Because that 7ft between under your seat and the overhead bin are the difference between life and death….

Airlines always need a new rule to try and make their sheep follow.

The idea is to detect it burning sooner. There have been numerous incidents

Im all for banning power banks.
Carry a charger and dont play freemium games all day... you'll have plenty of power all day long.

Im also all for banning pets in the cabin and banning people who take their shoes off.

While we're at it, I'm also all for firing FAs who spend most the flight on their phones and who make up rules.

What about airlines that fly international and don't have outlets to charge? Thats why we use one. You don't have to be a gaming nerd to lose power after 12 hours.

Which airline do you fly over 12 hours without charging available?

We were on a smaller plane last week, they added a rule about you can't wear any kind of cross-shoulder bag or strap. I assume that meant a huge purse or a bag like this

We didn't hear the same on bigger (737) size planes, I assume this may be in response to recent crashes, like the commuter jet that rolled over after a hard landing.
