If you're in a newer aircraft with the "new" larger bins, you're probably fine, though it may have to be flat instead of on edge.

Sorry, that's just not correct. Airlines are vigorously looking for additional revenue. Having an oversized carryone is just asking for a gate check at a much higher rate than the fee when you purchased the ticket

Most flights I'm on they start early offering free back check at the gate.
About 10 minutes before boarding they let everyone know its a full flight and those in boarding groups (whatever would be the 6th and later to board) might not have bin space so you can check bags for free to your final destination.
Add in if the airplane is a CRJ or a erj145 you will generally have to at least valet you bag due to the tiny bins those planes have anyway.

I see a lot of people with bags that are slightly or even not slightly larger and they just do the free hare check.

Update: Would have been 100% fine on the way up. Definitely would have had to gate check on the way back since was on ERJs.

I've never, ever, seen someone charged for a gate-checked bag. I have status + a cobranded CC, so it's free anyway.

Ill just add in as well, I check a bag every flight.
In the 300+ I've had in the last 2.5 years I've had zero issues with delayed or lost luggage (of course now that I've said that I'm Probably going to get hit soon).
I just get to the airport 2+ hours before the flight.
Then I dont have to worry about bin space or toting it around.

Ive been able to swap flights as well with no issues.

Maybe it depends.
I don't know on what airlines he flies.

Im always 1 of the big 3, predominantly American and United.
Maybe the low cost airlines are more strict?

I've always used a 24 inch carry on, soft side and hard shell, and never once been told I couldn't take it on.

The only time I've ever seen people being told to use that little measuring box with the dims is when their personal item is so big it's basically a glorified carry on in addition to their suitcase and I think the gate agent just wants to **** with them.

And for airlines, 95% of the time I fly United or Southwest.

None.

On average it takes about 20-30 min for baggage to get to a pickup.
By the time you deplane, make it through the airport and out its about 20-30min (depending on the airport).
This gives time to go to the bathroom, if need be stop at the rental car desk, etc.

So at most people not checking bags might save 10-15min depending on where they are seated.
But if I have work boots, hard hat, change of clothes etc its just easier check; and I dont have to worry if I decide to pick up a unique beer or wine while out to bring home.

I have a hard side that is just over 22". The airline ripped the handle off on this last flight, and I debated between getting the same suitcase or another one that is 23". I opted to replace like for like because I am increasingly having trouble getting the bin to close once I get the 22 incher in. In particular, I'm having problems with the interior/center aisle bins on bigger planes like the 777. Also have trouble on older 737s.

The only plane where it consistently fits fine is the 737 Max.

Didn't want to go bigger and have to fight with a bigger suitcase and attract the ire of every flight attendant I ever fly with. The jenga that goes on when stowing bags in the overhead bins at boarding is becoming increasingly annoying, and I don't want to make it worse.

I've never had an employee with a domestic airline look at it and say it's too big or even make me put it in a sizer. Foreign carriers are a different issue. Most of them make you weigh carry ons, and I am always over the 12 kg limit and have to check it.

Other than denver, unless a line broke I've never had bad take more than 30min total from parked at gate to they come out for pick up.
Alaska and I think Delta even have 20 min guarantees.

Again, I dont have an issue but others milage might very.
