The Willard Intercontinental is on Pennsylvania a block away from the White House and next to the Treasury building. A big plus for cocktail bar buffs is that the legendary Round Robin bar (the birthplace of the Mint Julep) is right off the lobby. Also, Ebbitt's Bar and Grill is just down the street. Great hotel and location.

Our family of 6 stayed at the Embassy Suites Georgetown. Walked some places, but really close to the Foggy Bottom metro station. Easy to get anywhere from there. We had 2 queen beds and a pull out couch, which worked great for 2 adults and 4 kids. Good, easy breakfast included.

Ritz Carlton on M Street near Foggy Bottom is tight. less expensive is the Ritz at Pentagon City but you would need to take the metro back to the Mall

I like the Dupont Circle area.

HAY ADAMS is very historical and you can walk to the Lafayette Park north side of the White House in probably 7 minutes

I stayed at the Hyatt Place National Mall in March and June of this year and found it to be convenient to a lot of things. Comfortable rooms, wonderful staff, and a pretty good hot breakfast (included).

Phoenix Park Hotel. Across from Union Station. Corner of Massachusetts and Capitol. Has an amazing Irish Pub downstairs and another next to it.

We stayed at the Embassy Suites Alexandria-Old Town and it was super convenient with a metro station right across the street. The Hilton Alexandria-Old Town was another place that was recommended by several people but it was booked up when we were looking. There are quite a few restaurants and a free shuttle down to the river front area from the hotel. It was cheaper than staying directly in DC in amongst the other museums and such and is very convenient to Reagan National.

I have had good luck with AC Hotel Washington DC downtown @ 1112 19th St. NW. I chose the hotel for convenience to my office. The hotel does not generally cater to tourists, which I prefer.

I like to take morning walks from that hotel to the FDR Memorial, passing by the MLK memorial, WWII Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, the White House, and the Washington Monument. Farragut North is the convenient station. It's a good spot.

In a different direction, you're at a slightly shorter distance from the museum of American history.

In yet another direction, the Kennedy Center is even shorter.

Again, I like it, because it is a 'business traveler's hotel' that is in a good 'tourist' spot.

There is a solid Belgian beer bar on the same block. Solid list.

How far in advance should one request tickets for tours from the local representatives?

I believe the earliest you can submit a White House visit request is 90 days before your visit and you usually don't hear until closer to the dates. Latest submission is 21 days.
