My son is a sophomore at the Naval Academy and I'm going out Labor Day weekend to visit. We want to do some hiking and probably do a lazy float on the river.

Any suggestions for hikes or outfitters for floating?

Might cruise over to Antietam on Monday to check that out as well if it's worth seeing. I'm a big history buff.

If you want to hike, go to the C&O canal. Harpers Ferry area is a great place to hike. Sheperstown WV near antitetum is also great.

I've been to Antietam a couple of times now, and it's a good visit. Very well done. Harper's Ferry town is also fun to visit. A little underwhelming, maybe, but I've also been there a couple of times, and enjoyed it both times. The Appalachian Trail passes right through the town.

Nothing that away from "The Yard" for the weekend is underwhelming for a Midshipman

Good point! Gettysburg would also be an option for you.

Harpers Ferry

my book is about battle of Third Winchester which is less than an hour from Antietam and Harpers Ferry (highway 7 from Berryville) when you keep moving past the rivers to CharlesTown along 340 and 15

I am a member of the Antietam Institute so have some ideas about Sharpsburg as well. Manassas along I-66

and of course if you are near Annapolis you can head up to Gettysburg PA from I-270 or Baltimore

We loved Harper's Ferry. It's where the Shenandoah and the Potomac (sp??) meet. It's also a significant civil war sight that changed hands like 8x during the war. John Brown first attacked the armory there as well. Well worth the time and the hike.

Make a reservation now for the NPS ranger led tour of Antietam. Best couple hours you can spend in my opinion in that area. Next best is to walk from Harper's Ferry across the Potomac and do the long version of the Maryland Heights hike all the way up to where the Union had their camp. Very good workout. And the view from the overlook down on the town and the rivers coming together is something else. That view is much better than the view from Jefferson's Rock which is an easy hike from town.

View from Harper's Ferry Brewery isn't bad either!

Sugarloaf Mountain is also very close and a hike with a great view payoff.

Enjoy the area, I don't miss NoVa but I do miss the proximity to that area.
