Spending a few days in Berlin next week, with one free day before we hop on a boat down the Elbe to Prague.
Anything I should do that isn't covered by most tour providers (we're on Viking BTW)?

I was there for work a few years ago and it sounds corny but my hosts asked me what I wanted to see and I blurted out "take me to where a section of the wall is still standing." It was actually really cool to see, with all the graffiti and everything with families just hanging out having picnics all around it.

was there several years ago and visited one of the remaining Flak Towers. Couldn't go in but it was awesome

Wife grew up on the wrong side of the wall in Berlin. She was 10 when the wall came down. I've been there a number of times.

May want to check out the following:

  • DDR Museum
  • Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate
  • KaDeWe (Kaufhauf des Westens) - It's like a big Saks or Neimann Marcus. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is near here on the KuDamm and the Berlin Zoo is also close by.
  • Museum Island - The Pergamon Museum is really cool and also the Berliner Dom (Cathedral) is there
  • Along the Spree there are a number of little beach bars that you can stop in and get something to drink
  • Speaking of drinks, be sure to get a "Berliner Kindl mit Schuss" - either red or green. Both are good, but red is my favorite
  • Hop on/Hop off Double decker buses are nice for seeing a lot of the city and getting around. Plus, you learn a little about the city too.
  • I would say Potsdamer Platz, but there's really not much to do there other than a small LegoLand.
  • As someone else said, I've never been, but for nightlife Berghain or KitKatClub ;-)
Edit to add: As FancyKetchup14 said, make sure you get a doener somewhere to eat. Berlin has the best. Also, get a currywurst too (Konnopke's Imbiss claims to have been the original place to serve this). And for a snack, don't be afraid to buy a bratwurst on a roll from a guy walking around wearing a grill.
