Wife grew up on the wrong side of the wall in Berlin. She was 10 when the wall came down. I've been there a number of times.
May want to check out the following:
- DDR Museum
- Checkpoint Charlie and the Brandenburg Gate
- KaDeWe (Kaufhauf des Westens) - It's like a big Saks or Neimann Marcus. Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is near here on the KuDamm and the Berlin Zoo is also close by.
- Museum Island - The Pergamon Museum is really cool and also the Berliner Dom (Cathedral) is there
- Along the Spree there are a number of little beach bars that you can stop in and get something to drink
- Speaking of drinks, be sure to get a "Berliner Kindl mit Schuss" - either red or green. Both are good, but red is my favorite
- Hop on/Hop off Double decker buses are nice for seeing a lot of the city and getting around. Plus, you learn a little about the city too.
- I would say Potsdamer Platz, but there's really not much to do there other than a small LegoLand.
- As someone else said, I've never been, but for nightlife Berghain or KitKatClub ;-)
Edit to add: As FancyKetchup14 said, make sure you get a doener somewhere to eat. Berlin has the best. Also, get a currywurst too (Konnopke's Imbiss claims to have been the original place to serve this). And for a snack, don't be afraid to buy a bratwurst on a roll from a guy walking around wearing a grill.
