Looking for any recs for Crete… specifically great/can't miss beach areas.

Secondarily - anything we have to see/do in general while there? Kids are 11 and 6 but very well traveled.

Crete is a big island, so it depends on where you are going. But I went to a wedding near Heraklion a few years ago and stayed in a condo in Ligaria about 30 min west of Heraklion. It was absolutely fantastic. Very local, out of the way place on a beautiful beach with 3 or 4 great restaurants. There are many small towns with great beaches so you can't go wrong.

Balos Beach is pretty amazing. You can take a ferry to get there, but we drove from Chania, then hiked down the path to the beach with our cooler of beer.
