I'm considering a trip to Whistler next June or July. It looks beautiful. We typically prefer hiking, road cycling, possibly fishing on our trips. Anybody ever been before ?

I love Whistler in the summer. You can take the gondola up and be hiking in the alpine (up around 6500' if I remember right) without any of the effort required to get there! The High Note trail is really good. Keep in mind, it'll still be under snow in June, likely into early July too.

There's a ton of other great hiking just outside of town. Check out Garibaldi Lake/Panorama Point/Black Tusk and Wedgemount Lake. All great options right near there.

AggieinWA - Thanks for the reply. That's good information to know regarding the snow in June/early July. We're thinking about going in late July. Do you ever see many people riding road bicycles ( not mountain bikes ) in and around the area ?

The zip lines between peaks is an amazing experience, summer or winter.

I don't recall that the Ski to Sky Hwy had that good of a shoulder or bike lane. It's a pretty narrow and winding road, so I wouldn't recommend that.

I remember seeing a lot of folks on cruiser bikes around town and some mixed use trails, so if you're into chilled biking experiences I think that's a for sure thing. I just don't think there's a ton of hardcore, Tour de France stuff out there.

Plus, you gotta think about the bears. I hate to say it, but the bears really can be anywhere and everywhere. We hear about them cruising around the golf courses and such. I don't know if they're a problem on the mt bike trails, but encounters have increased in town. Just google "whistler bear attacks". I'm not trying to scare you, but I sure wouldn't be engaging the chase reaction up there.

Whistler holds a special place in my heart. In 2013 we took a vacation there in the summer and loved it. My wife and I decided that we wanted to live in mountain town after that trip (lived in Houston then) made the decision to move to one.

The next year I googled "family friendly mountain towns" and my wife and I looked around and found one we loved. We knew no one but bought a house and did it. Ten years later and it's the best decision we ever made.

I'm a mountain guy and to me they are home. I'll always live in the mountains.

Long story short whistler is awesome!

AggieinWA - Thanks for the note. The Valley Trail appears to be a possible option. I'm curious if you've been on it much or if you've seen many bears on that trail.
We cycled a few multi-use trails that were converted from railroad lines in Idaho and Prince Edward Island. Beautiful scenery and lakeside rides. Saw a black bear sow and cub in Idaho and gave her a wide berth.

I haven't been on that trail at all, sorry. Lost Lake trail is another one that could be a good option.

I didn't mean to freak you out with the bear comment. Just wanted to make you aware that they are there and can be active in the village (something I didn't think about before my first visit). Encounters are rare, just be bear aware and carry spray. Also, if you plan your activities you should be fine (meaning, don't go biking by yourself at dawn when the bears are more likely active looking for breakfast).

We usually go looking for bears purposefully while we're up in Canada. We always see some, but it takes us planning, effort, and a lot of time devoted to it.

not sure what distance you ride or how much climbing you can handle, but whistler to lilooet via Duffy Lake Rd is one of the most scenic drives (rides) in north america. Its a hell of a climb early on though.

Spent a long summer weekend there before an Alaska cruise out of Vancouver years ago and loved it. Feels a lot like Vail Village but is still unique.

We go every other year for 2 weeks. It's incredible. Rockies in Whistler put anything in US to shame. Food and restaurants are just okay. People are super nice. Lots of international folks there working. Hiking, golf, bike riding, etc. Working my career to hopefully start summering/working from there. Go there and don't have 2nd thoughts about it.

Strangely, you'll probably hear 20 Australian accents for every one Canadian accent you hear (excluding French Canadian)

Great comments. Looks like we might be leaning more towards July. We generally plan 2-3 trips per summer to get a break from the heat. It gives me something to look forward to and makes it easier to get through the summer. We've been to Banff, Jasper, Vancouver Island and PEI and always found Canada to be a great trip. Nice exchange rate on the loonie as well.
