Looking for recs on two spots to visit in Costa Rica in January. Was thinking spending 2-3 days in La Fortuna area to see the volcanos and do some hiking. Then topping the trip off somewhere with a beach I can surf at or go diving. Any other ideas or tips is appreciated!

I often recommend that my clients experience a split stay in Costa Rica, starting with a few nights in La Fortuna before heading to the beach areas. My husband and I did this last summer, and it was an incredible experience!

We had an amazing stay at Amor Arenal in La Fortuna, and there are plenty of other fantastic accommodation options in the area as well. For the beach portion of our trip, we chose the Westin Reserva Conchal, which we thoroughly enjoyed. It's an all-inclusive resort, but if you're looking for a non-all-inclusive experience, there are some excellent alternatives like the popular El Mangroove.

Costa Rica offers so many incredible tours and excursions, including hanging bridges, waterfalls, hiking, snorkeling, fishing, and more.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like any help with planning or have any questions!

Matapalo. South of Quepos is my go to. I am not much of a surfer, but the waves there are impressive.

We just got back from CR and had a wonderful time. I went diving two days with Pacific Coast to Las Catalinas. Second day, went to Bat Island with Undersea Adventures. Both were excellent.

Bat Island diving is a once in a lifetime experience to dive with the Bull sharks. Aaron Ribble with Undersea Adventures was our dive master and he has hundreds of dives in the area. He came and picked me up in his truck from my hotel, we hung out and it was like diving with a buddy. This was out of Playa Coco.

Pacific Coast was great, big boat and good dive masters. That was playa flamingo.

We spent a week in La Fortuna last May at Nayara Springs (based on some comments I'd seen on a few threads here) and it was amazing - ended up being our favorite resort we've ever stayed at, so I'd highly recommend it if it's in your budget…super nice. In that area we did rafting, zip lining, hanging bridges and a coffee/chocolate tour and all were fun (rafting was probably our favorite).
