Headed that trip tomorrow, Google Maps wants me to go through Austin on 183, then across on 71.

Or they want me to go to Florence, hit I-35 north of Georgetown and take it through Austin to 71

Are they nuts?

Why can't I goto Florence, take 130 toll road, and stay on it until 71?

I am pulling an RV, so I won't be going 80. But being passed by speeders sounds better than I-35 Austin at noon

I used to drill in Brownwood when I was in the National Guard and I lived in Round Rock.

From Brownwood, I recommend taking 183 South to 190 in Lampasas.
Take 190 East through Killeen on Interstate 14 until you pick up I-35 South to Texas 130 to Texas 71 just east of Bergstrom.

I can re-write that in California speak if it helps

If you stay on 183 South to Texas 29, East to Georgetown, you'll come in South of the part where I-35 connects to Texas 130.

And I strongly recommend avoiding 195 South from Killeen. Too many soldiers driving stupidly on that road.

The only thing about that I-14 section between Harker Heights and Belton, there is a pretty good climb. Might be a minor hassle with the trailer.

Here is how I would go:

Brownwood - Goldthwaite - Lampasas - Florence

From Florence you can either ride 130 all the way to 71 or you can cut across and come down through Taylor/Elgin. I'd do the later to avoid traffic, but it is most certainly more miles.

No reason to take 35 at all.

Thanks, yall. More than anything, I'm trying to figure out why Google Maps is refusing to route me down 130 toll road.

Hollywood, our son and family live in Salado. Have done the Lampasas Killen route a lot. But we do t go past Salado. As much as anything, I mentioned the whole route in case there was something I was not seeing

I'm sure you're not dumb like me, but in the past I have accidentally turned off the "tolls ok" feature in my map.

Agree on check your settings.

On my navigation in my Jeep and also on Google Maps, I frequently have to double check the Ferries setting. Otherwise it wants me to drive to Houston to get to Louisiana (From Galveston).

Recently, I somehow got into an "Avoid Highways" setting when I was trying to drive from Bozeman, MT to Sturgis, SD. I was really confused about why Google Maps kept trying to route me on any road except I-90.

I can think of two times that Google Maps knew something I didn't.
  • 7 years ago, I wanted to drive on PCH (California Highway 1) from Santa Cruz to Ventura and Google Maps kept trying to route me inland to take The 101. It wasn't until I got south of Monterey that I saw the sign that said - Bridge Out.
  • During a massive snowstorm in early 2023, Google Maps knew that US 395 near Lee Vining was closed due to heavy snow. I couldn't figure out why it kept trying to plot a route from LA to Reno that took me through Hawthorne and Fallon, Nevada. When I got to Bishop, CA, I found out.

Thanks, it was telling me to take 183, and told me it would have tolls. But I did double check the settings this morning. Including the "most fuel efficient route" getting turned off.

If I told it to go to "Tesla Road" it would let me get onto 130
