Where and when did you go? Thoughts? Advice?

Contemplating a 5 night stay with the wife. 20 year anniversary and we love snorkeling and want a romantic vibe. Probably rent a golf cart and explore the reef parks and restaurants. Who's done this before?

We've stayed at Hotel Ixchel and Playa Arena both on Playa Norte, Ixchel is the nicer of the two and would be reasonable for an anniversary but it's not super nice by any means. We have friends that regularly stay and love Hotel Secreto, the only thing that has kept us from staying there is the beach immediately in front of the hotel is very limited and somewhat rocky, but also very private. But you are blocked from walking on the beach to other parts of Playa Norte, but could walk/golf cart to a beach club if you wanted better beach. Villa La Bella would be another one I would consider, though more rustic its a really awesome setting and they have a great bar worth visiting regardless of where you stay, hotel might not be 20th anniversary quality depending on your expectations.

Def do the golf cart, beware they do create DWI checkpoints, especially at night so don't drive with an open container and you should be fine, or bring an extra $100 to pay the "fine". I'd take a cab if going off Hidalgo for dinners at night.

We went this past October for our tenth anniversary. We stayed at Privleges Aluxes. It was really nice. Quiet and classy, but right on Playa Norte and Hidalgo. Highly recommend one of the big rooms with the pool on the top floor.
We rented a golf cart just for the day and it was great. I recommend carting to the Kin Ha for lunch. Food was good, but we stayed around for an extra couple hours enjoying their beach and dock. They have a role swing at the end of a long pier. Lots of fish under the pier if you have your snorkel gear. They rent kayaks and paddle boards. They have swings in the water by the shore you can use and still have bar service. Incredible views.
If you go fishing, Captain Pulpo is awesome. Lookhim up on trip advisor or I might have his cell number in my phone still.
We had a wonderful time and felt safe the whole trip. Just do it.

Nautibeach Condos has the best beach and a pretty good restaurant, but the property/rooms are very dated and small. It's awesome for a quick, inexpensive getaway, but it's definitely not luxury by any means. They do have a beach club if you'd like to stay somewhere a little nicer and still enjoy the beach.

I toured the Palace resort before it changed over to another hotel.

There is a brand new Secrets there that is absolutely amazing. I've had lots of close travel agent friends visiting there. Unless you do want a very quiet resort for all 5 days, you may want to do a split stay. We had a golf cart the day we were on the island and I loved just going around.

Mia Reef is another option and will price a lot better.

If I can be of any help, my email is in my profile.

I love Isla Mujeres and go there quite often. I would not call it romantic, nor do I think it's a great snorkeling destination. That said, some of the hotels listed above are good. I'd look into an "intro to scuba" dive to get down closer to the fish. We use Aqua Adventures to take us around. They also take us swimming with the whale sharks and mantas in July.

As a travel advisor, I've been to the new Impressions Isla Mujeres. Truly an exceptionable property. Also, last year I did a tour of the island with a golf cart company that you can truly relax and see all of the island. I definitely have some insight on the island if you are looking for a travel advisor.

Thanks Brooke! Well after seeing more online with my wife, we decided to convert our trip into a family vacation. So now we're taking along our adventurous 17, 16 and 14 year olds. So out with the romance and in with the family fun. So that property you pasted above is amazing. We will definitely not be staying there.

Isla is not where I would think for 3 teens. Now, my kids are still a ways off from being teens, so my gauge may be off.

The teens could absolutely have a great time, just small hotels and small beach areas and they would have to be good at making it happen, where at big places all the fun is kind of laid out for them.

If you need help with a family trip especially adventurous teens which would be a shift from romance my contact info is in my bio. There are a lot of options for teens and parents both to have a great time

My family has been frequenting since 2008. Parents have a condo there. It has gotten a lot busier over the years but it is still one of my favorites places. Great food, beach, and people.

Bumping this thread to get some advice from those that have been to the island....what are your favorite places to eat? I've downloaded the MapChicks app, but I wanted to tap into the knowledge of TexAgs!

Interested in how they setup their fideo to buy in the restricted zone. We're actually going through that process right now.

Took Aggie student kids for Christmas '12. Stayed at Nautibeach or Ixchtel I don't remember we like them both. Fished with Anthony Mendilla and caught 45 Sails on one full day and a half day.
Love proximity to everything from there.

Getting too crowded now.
