Recently booked a trip to Banff for mid March. Has anyone gone there around that time of year? If so, how is the weather typically and would you recommend going in March or rescheduling to a later date. We fly into Calgary and wondering if we should rent a car or do the bus transportation from the airport into Banff? Wasn't sure if it would be beneficial to have transportation during our stay. Would also love to see any itineraries of "must do's" that time of year as well as places to eat. TIA

We've been twice, including in late December. Rent the car. It's super easy to pick up/return at the Calgary airport, and rental car prices are usually pretty cheap. The drive to Banff is easy, and even if it's snowing, the roads will be clear. Banff is a walkable town, but you'll want a car to go to Johnston Canyon, Lake Louise, Marble Canyon, etc.

Yes, rent a car as driving is easy. It will be very cold with tons of snow. Go to Lake Louise and hang out at the ice bar on the frozen lake. It is very cool...pun intended.

It's been a few years but we went in late March/early April.
Like others have said, Calgary airport super easy to navigate and get rental car. We loved the drive over to Banff and we stayed right in town and walked everywhere.

We did a few tours with local companies and they came and picked us up from hotel. Lake Louise was a gem!

Thanks for all of the info. @Breezecustomtravel, what all tours did you do that you would recommend? We'll definitely check out the lake. We're staying in town at Fairmont Banff Springs.

We used Discover Banff Tours to go snowshoeing in Marble Canyon and ice hiking in Johnston Canyon.

Banff has become our go-to spring break trip. Much less crowded than NM or CO resorts and generally cheaper (especially with the favorable exchange rate).

We rent a car at YYC and drive to Banff, Lake Louise, the neighboring ski resorts, and even drove part of the icefield parkway. Ask for a car with winter tires.

Our preferred base is Canmore since you can get a 2/3bd condo for the same price as a hotel room in Banff. Good selection of restaurants, brewpubs, etc. in town also.

I need to look it up but I'm pretty sure it was Discover Banff Tours, also like someone else mentioned.
We did the Lake Louise one and a wildlife/nature one.
The wildlife one was awesome - we saw bears, moose, some really cool eagles and birds on and a fox or two.

If you're going to ski, Lake Louise is having one of their worst years on record for snowfall. Season total hasn't even broken 100 inches. They're at like 78 all season.

They are claiming over 100". Hopefully they get a lot more in the next six weeks.
