Because historically the lack of overhead bin space meant you ended up having to check your bags if you boarded near the end. It feels like that issue is largely going away as these newer aircraft with oversized bin spaces replace older planes.Pahdz said:

My wife has gold status on Delta but I typically make her way till the very end to board. We typically check our bags (we're in MSP so 98% of our trips involve no connection) so don't worry about overhead space, and why is everyone in such a hurry to be first onboard?
It drives me crazy when you are looking for a spot and some jackass has put a tiny ass bag up top and when you go to move it a bit to get your suitcase in the bin, they lose their ***** STFU and hold your purse or put it under your seat you selfish POS.
