Wife and I just got back from London and Scotland. We did 4 nights in London, 2 in York, 2 in Oban, 2 on Skye, 2 in Ballater, 1 in St. Andrews and 2 in Edinburgh before flying home out of Edinburgh. Great trip, really met some nice people and the scenery in Scotland was fantastic. Used Rick Steves and Texags for recs.

In London stayed at Arlington House apartments, I highly recommend. We did Tower of London, Churchill War Rooms, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, the Globe, St. Johns restaurant, John Wesley House and several pubs in our neighborhood.

Trained to York, really neat historic town. Went to the horse races, walked the wall and went to a church service in the York Abbey. Rented a car after York, was a little nervous about driving on the wrong side of the road but the worst part was shifting with my left hand. Took a bit but I got used to it "keep your hiney on the white liney." On the drive to Scotland stopped at Hadrians Wall near Homestead - really cool.

In Scotland just beware the roads are very narrow and in some places only a single lane, but drivers are very courteous. Oban we stayed at an Air BNB, ate some great seafood and toured the Oban distillery.

On Skye we stayed on the western part of the island at Monstadt Lodge. Well off the beaten path which we liked. Beautiful scenery. Drove the coastal loop - wish we had had a couple of more days.

On the way to Ballater stopped at the Dunvegan castle and the Culloden battle field. The drive through the Cairngorms national park is beautiful as well. My wife thought is was more scenic than Skye. Stayed at a BNB, No. 45, best breakfast I ever had. Walked around Balmoral, felt like we had it all to ourselves - it was great! Another distillery tour, Lochnager.

It was a stunning drive to St. Andrews. Went by Glamis Castle, we stayed at Rufflets, they have a huge garden and raise their own produce. On Sundays they let the public walk around the Old Course. Went to the R&A golf museum.

On the drive to Edinburgh we stopped for fish and chips at Anstruther - delicious. In Edinburgh we stayed at the Virgin hotel. Centrally located near the castle and the royal mile, toured the Britannia, and took in the Whisky Experience

Hope this helps, enjoy your trip!

Spent a week in London at the beginning of July. If you go then and remotely enjoy tennis, spend the time in the queue during the first week of the tournament just to get in. It's awesome.

We rented an Airbnb in Maida Vale. It was fantastic.

Totally agree with you're comment on Cairngorms vs. Skye. Skye was pretty. Cairngorms was breathtaking. Wife and I will make it back to Scoland at some point to spend more time in Cairngorms.

Edinburgh is an awesome city! The family will love it.

My wife and I did a 7 day London + Edinburgh trip for New Years a couple years back. The train ride from London to Edinburgh was quite nice. If your kids like Harry Potter, thell love Edinburgh.
