Curious what everyone's favorite trip they've taken is? Whether it was exploring, relaxing on the beach, etc.

I need some ideas for my wife and I's anniversary.

Probably our honeymoon.

Started in Bavaria in the summer and made our way to Croatia where we chartered a 40' catamaran with 3 other couples and a skipper/host.

Sailed from Split to Dubrovnik hitting different islands every day for a week. Then did 3-4 days in Dubrovnik area then Paris before coming home.

From a pure aesthetic point: We spent 2 weeks in New Zealand (split evenly between North and South Island). I wish we would have spent all 14 days in the South Island because that place is unreal.

From a fun people point: Ireland. Wife and I spent 12 days driving around Ireland and had a blast. Granted, we were also in our mid 20s, so socializing late at pubs was right up our alley. Not sure we'd be doing that now that we're in our mid 30s lol.

yeah trip of a lifetime.

We had another catamaran trip (a 50' beast) for Greece the summer of 2020... we all know how that went. Then we tried to reschedule for 2021... and again canned.

That was going to be 7 days around Naxos, Paros, Hydra, etc. and then a ferry to Santorini where we had a villa overlooking the caldera with our own pool for 4 days...

That trip will probably never happen as we now all have kids, etc.

10 year anny is in 4 years... I'm thinking we're going to do the Maldives, Bora Bora, or the Seychelles. Already started saving.

Wife and I did a week on a Moorings cat out of Split and loved it. Did the FP with two other couples and it was great also.

70 days cycling from Austin to Anchorage, AK. But I'm guessing that's not the type of trip you are looking for.

Honorable mentions: South Africa and Iceland

loaded question...

-We've done an AI in D.R (enjoyed that. we love the beach, relaxing and eating/drinking stress free)
-Hiked/golf in Banff
-Charleston, Boston- ate/drank our way around town as we walked the cities

Honestly we are pretty open with our travels. We love good food/drink, relaxing, but also exploring at the same time.

Our worst trip to date has been NYC. The nasty people, logistics of getting around, and pure dirtyness of the city just ruined it. While we enjoyed some of the things we were able to do, getting on the flight going home their sure wasn't any feelings of wanting to stay any longer.

Share your opinions on NYC. It was fun to play for a few days but my god I was ready to bounce.

Here are a few personal recommendations

-Hiking in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia. Which is still probably my favorite things I've ever done. I've never seen anything like that. The nice part is that after you're done hiking, either country will offer bountiful wine drinking opportunities.
-Machu Picchu. It's a pretty unbelievable place, but its availability is currently up in the air due to some good old fashioned Latin American geopolitical issues.
-Iceland. the landscapes there are mind blowing. Sometimes you feel like you're on mars. The weather can be inconsistent and a bit of a damper, however.
-Bali. It's not popular for nothing. It's cheap, English is fairly abundant, the culture is warm, the people are kind, and the food is great. If you've never been to Asia it's a great introduction. You can also stop in Singapore for a couple days on either end of your trip.
-Sonoma/Napa. Could combine with a trip to Yosemite or another one of California's NPs
-Maine/New England in the fall. It's gorgeous and the food is incredible. Lots of great breweries as well.

The obvious places like Italy and France and Spain must be mentioned.

It wasn't my favorite, but Morocco could be a good time for y'all as well.

Agreed. I hate NYC. Been there so much for work and the whole place just pisses me off.

Crowded, disgusting, ******y people anywhere that's nice. Expensive.

Are there some cool sights? yeah sure.

Been there in summer and winter, and I'd give winter the slight edge. Just stunningly beautiful. But I grew up in the south and had never really experienced snow and ice like that, so I may be biased.

I like your idea.

Overall best - Israel

Wildlife - Alaska

Family - Hawaii

Skiing - Banff

Relaxing - Caymans

Views - Utah

Romance - New England in the fall

My kids would say Branson, MO (that's over the beach and Disney World).

Wife and I, probably FL keys. We stayed in Islamorada, went down to Key West for the day.

No pressure to do anything in Islamorada, could eat/drink at resort, lay on the beach.

We're looking at the Virgin Islands right now, flights aren't cheap, but places to stay are and you don't have to rent a car.

Popular spots that we personally have checked off the box:

- Vegas - it was cold while we were there, so unless you gamble and do shows it's not relaxing when it's cold
- NYC - zero desire to go back and we didn't have a bad trip, just not relaxing at all. I'm glad we went, just never going back.

Bring a photographer, photography is the main focus for picking locations. Choices are mostly old buildings, animals, and scenery.

Matterhorn area of Switzerland and Rocky Mountain National Park (all four seasons) for outdoors views. Most fun ever - rafting the Grand Canyon.

Galapagos, Churchill, Canada and South Africa for animals.

Old buildings - Jerusalem and Petra. Egypt coming up this summer.

Overall favorite: Antarctica, just because!

7-day tour of D-Day sites in Normandy. We went to Caen, Bayeaux, Ouistreham, Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, Longue sur-Mer, Saint Marie du Mont and others. It was absolutely incredible.

Wanting to do this with my sons this summer. Did you go through a tour company? If yes, would you recommend and do you remember the name of the tour company?

Big Island of Hawaii is a good mix of relaxing and exploring- volcano tour, black sand beach, snorkelling, coffee plantation tours, etc.

Virgin Islands- you can island hop doing day trips to various islands and beaches. Lots of options for lodging

Anywhere in France or Italy are usually good trips, but not exactly relaxing if that is what you want for anniversary trip. I have trouble just relaxing when I'm on vacation in Europe. I feel like I have to go, go, go or I feel like I'm wasting the trip for some reason.

Carmel/Big Sur/Monterrey trip. Beautiful views, good restaurants, wineries to visit if that is your thing, golf, good shopping.

Coastal Maine trip

Charleston- can mix beach with sightseeing if going in the summer

Mexico is always a pretty easy option for anniversary trip if you just want to relax

I have taken some incredible trips but the best was a whitewater kayaking adventure throughout California. Me, John, Keith, a Kiwi named Nick, and his Aussie girlfriend (she drove us all around in a big old dually Mercedes Sprinter.)

We did a bunch of Class 4 and 5 rivers... North Fork of the Yuba, Cherry Creek, Toualumne, Upper Merced, American, etc. Water levels were high so it was always scary. None of us had ever done the rivers so it was all blind drops, killer canyons, and crazy adventures. We got into this groove in which I lead most of the time and if I could see any pools or water down below the drops I just kept going and would signal back up to the others where to go. Ran hundreds of rapids like this, occasionally got into trouble, rarely scouted. Ran entire slot canyons blind. Stupid but we were on our game.

I remember we scouted one rapid from shore since it was a huge class 5 named rapid. Two people said they were walking and I decided to run it down the left. I remember the first two waves in the rapid. From shore I though they were a couple feet tall and you would just bang through them. Those little baby waves were at least 10 feet tall and as I hit them I thought "wow, you are really f'ed this time." The remainder of the rapid was a massive whiteout. Came out the bottom upright and right on line and went on my way. Glorious. Last two guys walked after seeing that.

On another rapid I was trailing everyone. Came around the corner and I see everybody pointing right while I was of course going left. Huge hole. I though I made it out and got sucked right back in. fought it for while and finally swam and the river took off my shoes. Got my boat back and ran the rest of the river barefoot with my pride hurt.

John got into a bar fight in Groveland. We would have helped but he said "I got this." Sure enough, he had it. We froze our butts off in Merced, ran into friends I hadn't seen in years in some campground, laid out on a rock on the side of a river with a bunch of nudists from some college. 20 degrees every night and 90 every day. Every day brought cool stuff from sunup to sundown.

Sometimes I really miss those days of having a crappy job, being broke, and chasing dreams. No pressure just sitting in the sun with a bunch of 20 year old college boobs around you thinking, "I don't need to get back on this river, I can just stay right here."

Had you instead asked "where should I take my wife for our anniversary?" I would have said

Positano Art Hotel Pasitea

Don't try to see too many things, just drink some wine and walk around and live a little

Probably a week at El Dorado Casitas right after they opened back up. Got the honeymoon Casita for less than we paid for a swim up Jr suite right before covid. Freaking amazing... 30% capacity, full staff, stupid cheap, and everyone that was there was younger and more conservative. Helps that I probably sold about ten guns to people on that trip.

Norwich University set up a tour opportunity for alumni that was led by the National WWII Museum. The WWII Museum offers these tour packages regularly, but they are now VERY expensive because everything about them is high-end.

Our guide was Corinne Joimel. She was fantastic. You can contact her and she'll put together an incredible itinerary for you. It would be 100% worth every penny to have her be with you for the week.
