Good guess - I ski Vail/BC Sunday-Wednesday and Snowmass Saturdays.

What gear does everyone use? I have Virtika bibs and jacket, smith vantage helmet, smith I/O mag goggles, grass sticks poles, and Hestra fall line gloves.

Might be nice for some of the non-locals to know what all we ride as I can only speak for myself, but I'm a gear hound and love finding new drops.

Ski 5 days a week? When do you work!

I usually ski either open 8:30-10:00 or I ski late lunch 1:00-3:00. My office is directly next to the gondola and I have a reserved parking spot there. We also still have a house in Ridgway that we use to ski Telly, and then we live in GWS so we're close to Snowmass and my family has a place in BC, and my regional office is on the Wildhorse Gondola in Steamboat. It's a nice across the state smattering of steezy ski locals.

On pace this year for around 111 days and 2..1-25 million vert. ft. So probs around 1,200 - 1,500 chair lifts.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Hestra mittens a few seasons ago but just couldn't spend the money. Settled for some Black Diamond three finger mittens. Really like them.

Marker helmet, smith chromapop gogs, black crow poles to match the skis, and everything else is mostly Columbia outerwear.

I have the Hestra claw mittens and they're worth every cent I spent on them.

I'm a Giro helmet/goggle guy. Just had to get a new helmet while in Whitefish last week after a gnarly crash.

Solomon helmet (I've had this thing for years and still going strong), Dragon goggles, Patagonia ski jacket, Columbia pants. Just got some new Dakine mittens with fleece liners that have tech touch.

Could use some new pants and jacket is getting a bit tight since I'm post-Covid and child fat now.

I wear some cheap Boulder Gear bibs (don't hate) I got at Scheels. They do the trick and keep me plenty warm up here in MN.

Arc'teryx insulated shell coat
North Face bib
Hand Out gloves - just got these this year and they're awesome. In less than 3 seconds I have have my hand out without taking off my glove. Keeps the coat/glove interface sealed all day.
Darn Tough socks
Smartwool base layers
Smith helmet and I/O Mag goggles.

my brother just got the Hand-outs too.

Is the seal a zipper on top?

You should try smart wool socks... I've been using those for years.

I'm too cheap to buy their base layers, lol.

Northface flash dry baselayer legs and a helly hansen top.

Recently bought some costco baselayers and those have been good too. not as thick as the northface legs but work for most days.

I love gear talk.

  • Bib 1: Baker Bib
  • Bib 2: Backcountry's Bib - sit on the sales and it easily the cheapest Gore-Tex available
  • Shells: Smatter of Arcteryx, NorthFace and Backcountry (again, sit on their Cottonwood sales and it's the cheapest Gore-Tex shell)
  • Helmet (resort): Pret Cirque
  • Helmet (touring / mountaineering): Sweet Protection Ascender
  • Goggles: Smith 4D Mag
  • Gloves: Kinco's so I can fit in
  • Poles (resort): L9's AL - can't beat the price
  • Poles (touring): Wyeast from Folkrm
  • Bag (resort): Mammut Nirvana 18L
  • Bag (touring): Arc'teryx Voltair 20 Avy - manufacturer defect on the battery and now only rated to 10 deg. F - perfect for PNW, but not for you continental folks
  • Beacon: Mammut Baryvox
  • Probe / Shovel / Saw: The cheap set from BCA that's always on sale

I linked manufacturer sites I killed the links because wtf, TexAgs. I camp Backcountry's sells for everything.

I have a DMOS stealth shovel. LOVE IT. Also just picked up some MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes this off-season for winter backcountry camping and skiing.

Oh, yeah - your snowshoes jogged my memory.

Pomoca Pro skins. The blue ones. It's my end game skin. I'll never ski anything else.

Yeah the seal on top is a zipper. The added benefit of it is if your hands start getting too warm you can just unzip over the top of your hand and dump a good amount of heat.

Reddit loves Darn Tough socks and convinced me to get them - they are really nice and comfy. I'm sure the smartwool are great too. Ideally everything touching my body when I ski would be merino wool because then I don't have to worry about being so smelly (I invariably sweat at least some).
ChoppinDs40

good tip I got a while back was thicker socks can be somewhat counter-productive.

Women want to put on 2 pairs of socks. That may help in snowboots or something but not in skiboots.

This actually cuts circulation to the foot and causes them to be colder.

I've since gone to a thinner merino wool (smart wool) and have had less issues with cold and sweat.

Once your foot/boots gets wet, you're toast.
GarlandAg2012

Yep the Darn Tough ski specific socks are surprisingly thin but my feet were plenty warm. I am 6'4" and the still come up almost all the way over my calf which is perfect for avoiding layer interference in your boot. I pair them with Smartwool 3/4 length base layer leggings and it's great.
ChoppinDs40
How long do you want to ignore this user?
how's the 3/4 length? i still use full length and put socks on before baselayer to keep from interference. The smart wool socks come up to my knees.

Darn Tough and Smartwool are both great. DT has a little higher price point from my experience but both are quality.

I used to use Stance because they were a sponsor but I don't like them. They unravel at the toes and under the arch of the foot (worst places for ski socks to unravel). I had it happen with almost every pair I ever owned too.
GarlandAg2012
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I like them a lot but I haven't used them in very cold conditions yet.

You really don't want anything inside the boot liner except sock. I use the OTC smartwool and a generic set of yoga leggings under. The leggings don't go into my boot though. I get hot spots from anything other than sock in the liner.

Yep. Learned this in Marine cold weather training. 1 pair of socks and a good boot. Still froze my ass off.

I've got the Helly Hansen boot length base layer that stops just below the knee but still goes over the top of my socks. Works great for me. I just bought a pair of these socks and really love the feel. Smartwool socks have never done well for me

Wet feet are the WORST.

If you get Lange's be prepared for the Lange leak. It's an easy fix though: duct tape or gorilla tape over the toe portion of the hardshell. Great boots but how after 20 years the issue still exists blows my mind. Maybe other hard shells do the same but damn…

I'll post a picture after yoga.

Obermeyer jacket I scored off pro motive or whatever it's called now. (being 6'8" really love this tall size version. It just seems to fit better than every other jacket I've owned)

One set of obermeyer pants along with an assortment of Colombia pants.

Smith vantage helmet and I/O 7 goggles. Getting close to time to upgrade the goggles I feel. Will probably get some this summer maybe in preparation to moving back to CO this summer.
Outdoor research active heat gloves

Any word on these Glade goggles, Panda?
TexasAg93
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I just bought my wife a pair of Glade goggles with the photochromatic lenses. She loves them and has not experienced any fogging issues. They look great too. One of my ski buddies that uses Glade goggles also speaks very highly of them.

My goggles are Revo and also have the photochromatic lenses. I love them, but probably would have been just as satisfied with the Glades and could have saved $75-$100 bucks.

If you are willing to spend the money, I recommend the adaptive lenses--whether Glade or Revo. I ski pretty hard (relatively speaking for an old guy) in varied terrain and conditions. I have really benefitted from having goggles that adjust to the light conditions. I have not run into a situation yet where I could not see the contours of the snow ahead of me--e.g., no flat white effect.

ChoppinDs40

how well do these lenses really work? Can you give some specifics? like in snowy days it brighten things, sunny it darkens?

I've got 3 sets of lenses for my goggles - regular darker tint, yellow tint and a clear set for absolute white-out days.

I ski when we're there, whether that be white-out or bluebird days.

The lenses work great, but they are not going to cover the entire range a 3-4 lenses set will cover. I know there is a guide for the Glade goggles showing the range of light conditions covered be the particular model.

I like my Revo set because they adjust from much lighter for overcast conditions to dark for Bluebird. The best way I can describe is that the adjustment results in a generally consistent view in most conditions. The Revos came with a yellow lense for white out type conditions. I have only needed that lense one time.

Bottom line is I rarely have to swap out lenses and really like the consistent view I get as the lenses adjust to varying light.

If you go with Glade, my recommendation would be to get the pair that adjusts to the lowest light condition possible. The dark end of the range will likely be enough for the bluebird days. I personally don't like super dark lenses anyway.

I've never skied Glade's but that's only because I get pro deals on Smith Spy Oakley and a couple others.

I've heard nothing but great reviews. I'm waiting for someone to leave a pair at the ski shop….

Hello from Cooper Spur, OR. Place rips if you've got littles. It's also owned by Meadows and I can usually squeeze a quick skin out to Tilly Jane / Cloud Cap while they apres-hot cocoa.
