I've never taken a solo vacation, but I'm considering doing it this Fall. I'm 30 years old and a single guy and most of my travel buddies are married and have families now so they can't take trips as often as we did before.

That being said, where does the travel board recommend I go? Time frame is sometime in October. Looking to stay within the United States.

I'm open to all suggestions. Willing to drive or fly. Prefer mountains to beach and country to city but I like both. Don't have an exact number as far as budget goes.. but not looking to go crazy either. I'll consider just about anything.

Any other tips for traveling solo are welcome and appreciated.

I'd suggest you add a little more detail. Budget? Drive or fly? City or country? Mountains or beach?

More details are added. I'm extremely open minded.

Any details on where you have previously traveled so we don't point you somewhere you've already been?

I've done Boston and NYC solo for Astros games and loved every minute of both. I didn't really have a plan outside of the Astros games and found plenty to do in each city to keep me busy for 3 days / 2 nights. I love a relaxing trip but I think I might get bored doing beach/mountains unless I booked at least a full day of fishing. My advice would be to target an activity you'd like to do then search for the best places to do that.

I actually considered Boston. I'm a big baseball guy so I could hit Fenway and there's more than enough to keep me busy there.

Look into a Caribbean cruise. Lots of people cruise solo. You can get them cheap out of Galveston. Shore excursion can be done easily single. Plus you'll probably meet a lot of people on the ship.

Virgin Voyages is 18+. There's probably tons of cougars looking to smash.

Fly to Boston for a few days & then head north to Maine or New Hampshire. You may be able to catch the fall color depending upon when you go.

National Parks are great solo. Moab would be fantastic weather in October!

Or Bend, Oregon. There's a ton of outdoor activities and breweries to keep you busy for a while!

You could to the "Mighty Five" in Utah. October is a great time.

Fly to Vegas, rent a car and make a loop. Zion - Bryce - Capitol Reef - Canyonlands - Arches.
Took 10 days when I did it.

In your situation I'd get out of the US while you have the opportunity.

Thailand, Vietnam, Colombia, Argentina, coastal area of southern France, Greek Isles

You gonna need at least 10 days for that so nevermind.

If baseball is over by the time your trip starts, think about Asheville, NC.

Big Bend or Guadalupe Mountains.

Or get up into the Ouchita Mountains for fall color.

If you can go on short planning, caribbean islands or central america is cheap that time of year (hurricane season).

Death Valley is a place that I found very intriguing. The one caution I'd air is that it truly can be dangerously hot, so maybe its not the best place to be solo. On the other hand, it ISN'T the kind of place many find as intriguing as I did, so it might be a good thing to do alone. October would be past the worst heat. When I went it was May, most of it was pretty pleasant, Badwater Basin was about 114. It is not that far from some other pretty cool places, and even Vegas if you want the taste of the city. Vegas alone sounds pretty awful to me, though.

The Olympic Peninsula in Washington State gives you beautiful scenery with both mountains and ocean, hiking, should be really nice weather in October, and also Seattle nearby.

Moab Utah… Arches and Canyonlands National park are both there, and could also the entire Southern Utah swing through Monument Valley, Zion, Bryce…

Go see the aspens turn in Colorado in early September. Head to Pagosa/Durango for camping/fishing, and then drive through the San Juan Skyway to Ouray.

Another vote for PNW if you haven't been up in that area - especially in October

What's so good about October in the PNW? It's typically overcast and misting that time of year. My recommendation would be June-July when it's 80F and sunny every day.

The Gorge's colors + orchards + vineyards:

Silver Falls State Park is something special in October:

Hood's first snow with the larches changing:

Laurelhurst, Hoyt Arboretum and Japanese Garden in Portland are full of different color.

Aspens on the Upper Rogue and Deschutes around Crater.

And my ******* backyard:

But I'm biased.

I want to do this with my family in an RV so very bad. Is q huge item on the list when the kids are little older.

We did this but instead flew into Salt Lake City & out of Las Vegas. Cost more with the rental car, but it saved me a 7-8 hour one way drive from Moab back to Vegas at the end of the trip.

That was also my plan, but, at the time the rental penalty almost doubled the price so we made the long drive from Moab to Vegas. Wasn't that bad of a drive.

Oregon is my favorite state. I have lived in Utah for 6 years and lived in Colorado for 6 years prior and my goal is to move to Oregon next and stay. I fell in love the first time I went and even more every time I go back. Just went last month actually. Gimme all the clouds and rain and cool weather, please!

Beautiful pictures!

CO was our other option. The green and variety won out in the end.

But UT/CO skimo > OR. We still keep our Epics mainly for CO and Whistler.
