Just tested positive 2 hours before our taxi to the airport in Ambergris Caye Belize. Anyone down here with a private aircraft? Just kidding, not really. Good thing is my wife, kids and in-laws all tested negative so they're headed back to Texas. I've got 3-5 day min stuck in a hotel (not even supposed to go on the balcony). And they requiring me to be transferred by ambulance to the new hotel.

Test of the trip was good. First time back in 10 years. Changed a lot.

How much you have to pay them to give you the "positive" result?

Sounds like you hit the jackpot here.

I wish I felt that way. It be different if I was able to hang in town, relax by the pool. They're going make me order food deliveries/groceries and not let me leave the room. Wife did leave her Xanax for me though. Get the retest on Wednesday morning.

Can you go to a local pharmacy today and confirm your positive results?

We did the rapid and additional PCR to confirm. Both positive. And she wasn't going to be bribed.

I'm mildly concerned at this prospect as we have a trip to the Cancun area in early Feb. I guess the only way this makes any sense is that the infected person will be travelling on an airplane and may risk infecting folks on the plane or in the airport? B/C its not like you're brining back a disease that isn't already in the States.

The place we're staying in Cancun (big all-inclusive, standard stuff) is doing the testing on-site and if positive allowing the positive person to quarantine for free. OP, hope you're getting your extra nights for free!

Definitely not free. I was moved to another "hotel" along with another positive guest at a sister property of the mgmt company. We're were in a 5 bedroom house so financially it wasn't going to work staying there for 3-5 days.

Please blog on this forum about your experience. Super interested. Symptoms? Vaccination status?

I'm curious how you are going to be handled and how much out of pocket costs you may or may not incur

Moderna vaccines, no boosters. Allergy like symptoms, which for me could have been attributed to many things. Here they are letting me test again after 3 days, if negative, I can go assuming I have a flights available on Wednesday. If still positive, I'll retest on Friday morning. 5 nights will be $700, plus food/groceries. And any flight cost differences. Restricted to my room only. Guest next to me in the same boat but from Canada. She can't get a flight until after her quarantine period, so I'm sure that's very frustrating.

Not sure of what it actually is. They actually brought us here in an ambulance with its lights on and taking straight to our rooms. Even the property manager told the guys driving, "isn't this a bit overkill". Can't imaging having people delivered to your place in an ambulance is good for business.

Hope they don't charge you for that ride. Have to think a taxi would have been cheaper and as effective in not spreading the 'rona. Ride with windows down & masks on and save mucho dinero.

Ha, the ambulance here operates on donations only so technically it was free. I did tip them.

And just so we're on the same page, we're playing fast and loose with the meaning of "ambulance"

That's probably good b/c I was envisioning USA style ambulance ride at $1,000

BTW...just realized this does not compute.

Why not drive your golf cart to the airport? Everyone has a golf cart there.

Will post more tomorrow. It's basically a husband/wife team that runs this place, plus the Nauti Crab restaurant/bar next door. We're on our own for food/drinks/groceries but they can help facilitate the orders, etc. Since we were at a house before, I brought some extra food we had. Otherwise, pretty much like I'm just a paying guest, which is what I am. It is a waterfront spot so the scenery is nice.

We stayed around the corner from there last time we visited. Loved the breakfast tacos the ladies sell on the streets in the morning (3 for $1).

I had this concern when we were in Canada over the holidays, especially when I came down with an actual cold (or cold-induced rhinitis).

We bought the BinaxNOW tests that come with the zoom call. There were only two of us, so we brought all six.

If I tested positive, I was planning to use up all of those before going for a local test. I had four extra tests, so I figured that would get me an extra 3-4 days (testing once a day). Looking back, the extra tests were a nice cushion to have.

Let's just say the "testing protocols" are not very strict with these tests. Unless you had a very strong/dark second line, I'm not sure the proctors would be able to see it.

Also, as a side note, no one even checked our Covid test results before we boarded the plane to come home - not the US agent at the Calgary airport and no one from the airlines.

Wednesday update. Tested positive again this morning so I moved my flights to Friday when I'll test again. The nurse was adamant that I would test positive on Friday as well based on how quickly the 2nd line showed up and recommended I wait 5 days to retest (saying anything sooner would be a waste of money). Friday will be day 5 from original positive. Greatly hope she's wrong. If anyone has some advice on how generate a negative rapid antigen result, let me know.

Seems to me like you'd expect to test positive today if its only been two days after your initial positive test. And the COVID board here would probably know more about testing at day 5 but I honestly thought that people can test positive for many weeks after a COVID case. Which is precisely why the CDC is allowing "recovered from COVID" as a way back into the USofA without a negative test. See the below website...

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/testing-international-air-travelers.html

Quote...

If you recently recovered from COVID-19, you may instead travel with documentation of recovery from COVID-19 (i.e., your positive COVID-19 viral test result on a sample taken no more than 90 days before the flight's departure from a foreign country and a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel).

You could very well test positive on a rapid antigen test for 90 days. Would 100% recommend moving to PCR.
