Thank goodness for our contracted rate with National.

We did ours for Alaska/Anchorage several months ago. It was $1500 for 2 weeks. $2000 after taxes and fees.

My wife saw the same thing when she used her personal account. I gave her my corporate code and it went back to "normal" (basically 1/3 of what she was getting a quote for).

I understand in Hawaii but didn't expect it in some of these locations in the US.

There is no some of these locations, they're all terrible

Lately, my business travel requires me to rent a car locally and drive. Prices for rental cars have increased dramatically. Looking at $100 per day minimum even for a 'mid-size.'

You are lucky if you can even find a car to reserve in a lot of places now. We are going to Yellowstone in a couple weeks and I reserved months ago and was shocked at a week for $800 price...that seems like a steal now. And there have been no cars available to rent around there for awhile now.

I am still concerned we won't have a car available when we get there...even with a reservation. Hearing stories like that all over the place. People have a paid reservation and are still waiting for a car to become available a lot.

I locked in a Ford Escape for a 10 day Pacific Coast trip (Seattle to San Diego) a couple of months ago using Booking.com for $768. American changed our arrival time, moving it up a couple of hours, but I can't change our pickup time without cancelling the old booking, so we'll kill a couple of hours at the airport in Seattle, if necessary, rather than pay the new rates.

Check out this video. Link takes you to the part talking about lack of rental cars in Alaska, but the whole thing is interesting if you have the time:

Rental Cars, most of all - yes...

But these covid prices have spoiled me. Just booked a few work trips and I'm paying twice as much on flights and quite a bit more on hotels than I had been paying over the last few months. I know it's a lot of things - EVERYONE travelling, summertime, shortages. But geez.

Cancelled our trip to Glacier national park this summer because rental cars out of Bozeman would have cost us around 3k for a little over a week.
Just checked prices again & it's $4,500.00 for "supplier choice" of car... ie whatever is in stock.
A suburban for that time frame rents for 11k.

I have booked cars for Hawaii in September and its about $1k for a week.

A friend of mine who is the GM for a Sixt location says they are expecting to get a big chunk of their inventory back in August though, so prices could potentially start falling at that point. Hoping that happens and I can cancel and rebook for lower price.

Check with your employer and see if they have a contracted rate code with any of the rental car companies that they will let you use for leisure rentals. We have a code for Avis that we can use for personal rentals that cuts the rates pretty close to 50% from whatever shows up if I just go through the Avis website without the code. We are renting in Montrose, CO in a couple of weeks, and an intermediate SUV was ~$850 for 6 days. With the code, we are paying about $430.

Even if you can book a reservation, is there a way to confirm a vehicle will actually be available? I had one reserved in Denver about two months ago, two days prior they called and said sorry we don't have any cars. The day of they said they could give me a 12 passenger van.

I booked a car back in April for 5 days out of Anchorage for our trip in July....for under $500....now y'all have me worried. If I show up and they dont have a car waiting for me, the entire trip is essentially dead in the water.
Bluecat_Aggie94

Exactly. Contract rates do not guarantee car availability.

I got a decent rate in Vegas a few weeks ago.

And use Lyft over Uber. Apparently the pay structure is way better so in big markets, nobody will pick you up through Uber but had no problem getting rides through Lyft.

I reserved through National and I called the other day to try to adjust my reservation. As part of the call I asked the lady if there will indeed be a car for me when I arrive and she was certain that if I had a reservation already, a car will be there for me. I hope she's right...

We called a couple of weeks ago to reconfirm ours. They swore there would be a vehicle. If we don't have one we are screwed.

I booked our car for Anchorage months ago and got a standard SUV for 14 days at $1200. I'm really, really worried there won't be a car for us when we get there, but not sure what there is to be done about it. I know some people are having luck in Alaska using Turo, but I haven't looked into it yet.

I'm really nervous our car won't be available at our contracted rate in July for Florida. It's going to get bad if not cause I have a one way rental from Jacksonville to Orlando. What makes it worse is it is 2 back to back reservations. In theory we just have to show up on the day we turn it in and pick it back up - they better let us continue with the car.

Maybe not...

We are leaving for Alaska tomorrow. We were originally supposed to go last year, and I changed the trip up significantly when I rebooked for this year. In hindsight, it was a great decision, considering all of the logistical issues right now.

All of our transportation is by train and motor coach. We take a train from ANC to Seward and motor coach from Seward to Talkeetna and Talkeetna to the outskirts of Denali, and then Denali National Park bus transportation to get to Denali Backcountry Lodge. We were supposed to take the train back to ANC from Denali, but the schedule changed, so we are on a motor coach.

I'm sure if you were planning to rent a car, the idea of traveling by train or motor coach is not ideal, but it may be better than cancelling the trip completely.

Does anyone have any ideas or relief for someone without a corporate account or discount code?

We're flying into Chicago Midway and then driving into Michigan from June 26th to July 4th. We need a car that will hold 6+bags. The cheapest that will hold us is a minivan for about $1500 - which is insane. We also do not need the car for the duration of our stay, but there are not any one way rentals available.

My other thoughts were to get a car rental out of Gary, Indiana and not pay the Chicago taxes, but that means that I have to get from Midway to Indiana. Also looking at Turo, but there seems to be a little more risk there with not much savings.

We took a Suburban for a similar amount of time about 2 years ago for less than $800

Between the mask mandates on planes, increased prices and the rental care situation you really have to want to travel right now to make it work. Are there any shuttle type companies that will drive you?
Yeah, I am sure there are. But they probably will make you wear a mask, will take longer than a flight, and will cost more than the airfare. And then you will still need a rental car to get around once you get there...

I tried Turo for the first time on a trip to SLC. It cost just under half of what National wanted for a similar size car. I paid an extra $20 for the owner to meet me at passenger pick up with the car and passenger drop off when we returned it. I was happy with the way it went.

Just rented a car (Jeep) from Portland to Seattle. Cost $750 for a week and that included a $150 "different drop location" charge.
