Looking for some random travel destinations for a week long trip with the wife.

Trying to think places outside of the ordinary (Vegas, Nashville, NY, Gulf Coast).

Open to US or Mexico.

Open to anything low key to high energy.

Savannah
Charleston
Maine (Portland, Acadia National Park)
Pigeon Forge/Asheville
Sedona
Jackson Hole
Lake Tahoe
Big Sur

Mexico suggestion: depends on what you want. I love the state of Oaxaca. From the capital city to Puerto Escondido, the whole state is awesome. Incredible food. Great mountains. Pretty beach. It's got it all. Chiapas (San Cristobal de Los Casas) is really cool with lots of great stuff near it.

Depending on time of year, I think the PNW is fantastic. San Juan Islands, Olympic National Park, Mt. Rainer, Seattle, etc. I am sure other can get more specific, but I have always loved visiting the area.

Tucson AZ. Incredible hiking and golf. Amazing food. Underrated art scene. The city itself is huge, but you could limit yourself to a specific area to do what you're interested in pretty easily. JW Starr Pass and Dove Mountain are popular resorts.

We're looking at June - August.

We briefly threw out some ideas the other day and came up with Hartford and Charleston. I wanted to see what TexAgs thought and if anyone had any experience with other "random" destinations.

Thanks for the info so far! Keep it coming.

Think of some area or attraction you'd like to see, and add on from there.

Yellowstone? Add Craters of the Moon Santa Fe? Add Los Alamos, Abiquiu and Albuquerque.

We've wanted to see Mackinack Island, so we'd see what's near it. I want to see the Museum of the Air Force in Dayton, OH. Don't know what's near it, but I'd find out.

Tucson has some cool stuff. Desert museum, airplane graveyard Davis-Monthan, Pima air museum, not too far to Tombstone.

I've always wanted to rent a houseboat on Lake Powell.

Charleston is one of if not my wife and my favorite places. We try to get there every year. Another place we've loved was Victoria, BC. Stay at the Fairmont Empress with access to the Gold Lounge. Whale watching, good food, good museums, great scenery, and good "greenery".

my list for USA would be

Maine - We took in-laws to Boothbay Harbor, in August, several years ago. It was my first time and was pretty cool. Wish we could have spent more time in Portland (not that one).
Asheville - In-laws again because they lived 1.5 hrs away. Wife and I stayed at Grove Park Inn, really nice place.
Savannah - only one night on roadtrip to see MIL. Would like to stay longer next time.
Charleston - see previous
Upper Michigan
Idaho
Coastal Oregon - day trip to Cannon Beach and back through Tillamook and along William River, really prettty foliage in Fall, on way back to Portland (that one, also a cool place).
San Diego - two trips, one for a Holiday Bowl asskick
South Dakota (Sturggis rally and great national and state parks with great weather)

You didn't put it on your list so I'd say: Anywhere, Colorado.

UP of Michigan. Stay in Munising and enjoy the July 4th fireworks and fair in the harbor on Lake Superior, take the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore boat tour at sunset, glass-bottom boat tour of shipwrecks in the harbor is interesting if you are a history buff, hike to the various waterfalls and the trail that follows the cliffs along the National Lakeshore...one of our favorite out of the way and off the beaten path places to hang out. Weather and scenery is spectacular in summer. Yoopers are fun folks that will remind you of Texans with a funny accent...they have quite the independent streak in them. There are other fun things to do in the area like Upper Tahquamenon Falls, which is second only to Niagara Falls in size east of the Mississippi River.

Hot/humid depending on when in the summer you visit, but you could do a multi-day trip of Jekyll Island, GA, St. Simons Island, GA, and Savannah.
Staff - take out the trash.

There is a ton to do and see in northern Arizona/Southern Utah.

Obviously the Grand Canyon, but also Zion, Antelope Canyon, Arches, Monument Valley...

I've done several of those but not all and I can't wait to get back.

Colorado is a good suggestion. Looking for places we don't typically go. I should have included it.

Hartford was going to be for the Travelers Championship next month... if I can get the wife on board.

wife and I have done both of these places as well. I wouldn't consider charleston random, however the Victoria rec is. Problem is getting into Canada right now. Not sure if its possible.

FWIW when you are able to get there Victoria is the perfect random vacation. The island is off the charts classy and nice. When we went we combined it with a few days in Seattle/Tacoma. Granted, not sure if I'd enjoy Seattle in its current state.

Also I'd add North Dakota to your list. We've never been, but my cousin and his wife seem to go every few years. They enjoy it.

Stanley, Idaho in the Sawtooth Mountains.

Absolutely incredible geography, hiking, white water rafting, and fly fishing. We spent July 4 week there one year staying in a cabin directly on one of the creeks running off the Salmon River. Standing in those creeks with a rod and no one around was one of the more spiritual events I've had.

If you go during July 4, Stanley does a fireworks show (or at least they used to) that is incredible simply because of the sound of it echoing off the mountains. It sounds like you are being bombed by B-52 bombers. It's awesome.

Fly into Boise and spend a night or two there because it's a cool town as well. Or you could spend a night or two in Sun Valley to get a higher end dining and night out fix on your way to or back from Stanley.

Makes sensebut the only reason I could think of to go to Hartford. There are some interesting sights an easy day trip from there, though.

Oh wow- so many places! But for that time of year I'd recommend somewhere with pleasant weather.

Durango Colorado. any and every outdoor activity you can think of along with some great breweries and shopping.

Bend Oregon - same as Durango.

Rapid City South Dakota - great base camp for Mt Rushmore, Badlands National Park and Devils Tower. Neat town with a lot to check out and see.

Thank you for this thread! I would have never thought of Rapid City, South Dakota. Because of your suggestion, we just got back from a week there! It was fantastic! Custer State Park, the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Wind Caveit was all fabulous! Thanks for the suggestion!!!!!

Hartford?? Other than th Golf Tourn. there is not much there. Although you will be closer to Boston, the Cape and Newport or Narragansett, RI. New England is always better in the fall. Good Luck!

The two best places we've been this time of year were San Juan and Apostle islands (third would be Glacier NP). Both were a part of a longer trip, but both were the best part of the trip. Depends on what your looking for.

Might go UP next. Love the Great Lakes and the Wisconsin side of Superior.
