Southwest airlines wifi - good enough for a wifi phone call?

Have a flight coming up with and a phone call scheduled during. It's actually a zoom call, but I do not need to be on video which I'm pretty sure would not work in the air anyways. Just need to call in with a regular phone number. Wondering if SW wi-fi allows this (and if it is reliable) with the normal iPhone wifi calling and/or if there is an alternative app that would allow this on SW wifi? Thanks!

I think southwest uses gogo inflight for their wifi. My use of gogo has been limited but I am pretty sure they block voip so maybe use computer for audio instead?

Pretty sure the T&C's says no but also wouldn't you be annoying to everyone around you? Do you just have to listen and not talk?

Should have clarified...just listening. Shouldn't need to say anything other than "hi I'm on"

I was about to say "Don't be that guy." Glad you clarified

No. As much of a Southwest fan as I am, their WiFi is the worst out of everyone. Ping and latency is incredibly high and speeds terrible. Normal web browsing is essentially unusable. That's even if it's not just straight up blocked.

Hate to say it, but I agree. I like a LOT of things about Southwest - but to this point their wifi access is not one of those things.

Internet quality doesn't matter. No domestic airlines allow VOIP so it won't work regardless.

wow. haven't flown SW a lot, but I watched the entire astros/yankees game 2 last year on my flight without interruption. In fact the entire plane was watching the game without problems.

There are ways around that. If you can connect through a VPN and use a VoIP app for calling, they have no way of inspecting the packets to flag them as VoIP. I've used Cisco Jabber to link back to my company's phone system while connected to work VPN in the air, works flawlessly. This was on AA, btw.

I have flown SW quite a bit. TV/Movie watching is generally never a problem. Working "online" is spotty at best. I would expect better internet quality for sure, but I don't fly other airlines enough to compare.

Their live and on-demand is separate from their internet. Their TV is usually pretty rock solid. I have A List and free internet access and I don't even bother trying anymore. It just doesn't work. United and AA's Internet seem to be pretty decent.

I'm on Southwest right now and a Zoom meeting loaded for me. I didn't actually attend a meeting, but at least it loaded. Looked like it would work.

Just did a Zoom call with a buddy from 30,000 feet. It works. I could see and hear the other person just fine, but it was hard for me to speak with a mask on. If you just viewed someone else's session, you should be fine.

I assume you used the Zoom app on a phone or laptop? Great info, I appreciate this and all the other responses.

I used my laptop. One thing, keep in mind that take-off and landing you can't have your laptop out. But, an iPad or phone is acceptable. It's not ideal, but you'd at least be able to say you attended the meeting.

It's capable of doing it. Will it when you try? Who knows.

Signal is super spotty for anything other than their in flight entertainment.
