Considering extending a working trip to South Carolina to include leisure time at either Charleston or Hilton Head area. We are not golfers, just beach/relaxation seekers. Any thoughts/recommendations about the pros/cons of either destination?

HHI for chilling on the beach. In Charleston you're going to have to drive down to Folly, Sullivan, or Kiawah.

although i liked HHI, i didn't find the beaches to be all that great. reminded me more of the texas coast north of padre.

Agreed. I went there for the first time about a month ago (was there during the Heritage) and was pretty underwhelmed at the beaches.

We spent time in Folly and Charleston a couple summer ago and yes the beaches are not pristine like in Destin or along 30A.

They're not pristine but they're VERY clean, not overcrowded, and enjoyable. Basically they're nice but not the white sand clear water you get elsewhere.

If you're not golfers, then I would take Charleston every time. A great, historical and quirky little city. Plenty to see and do and one of the greatest dining cities in the south.

Do some searching on this board. There are multiple threads concerning Charleston.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

Savannah! Went to the South Carolina game back in the fall on the Traveling Aggies annual football game trip. Spent 3 nights In Charleston. After the game we drove to Savannah for 3 nights. Savannah was the best!

... and it's close to Hilton Head as well.

My wife and I spent a few days in Charleston and absolutely loved it. I would say it was more adventure than pure relaxation. There's so much Revolutionary War and Civil War history. The restaurants are outstanding. The Charleston locals (Uber drivers, waiters, etc.) told us we would like Hilton Head, so maybe we make it there one day.

We found all-inclusive resorts in Mexico are the best value to relax on the beach.

Lived in that area for years. Charleston is amazing. Hilton Head sucks. HHI is overcrowded and only fun for retirees who like to play golf.

HHI is for golf and that's about it. You can't throw a rock and not hit a golf course. I didn't see a whole lot to do besides golf which was great for us because we were on a golf trip.
