I haven't been impressed with the "high end" ones I've been to and am looking for suggestions for upcoming trip.

Clancys, Gautreaus, and Friday lunch at Galatois which is more of an event but I do like the food if you know how to order.

ruby slipper for breakfast, especially if you like eggs benedict, it's their specialty.

port of call for burgers or willie mae's for fried chicken are great for lunch.

lots of other great dinner spots already mentioned. we've also enjoyed cafe amelie and k-paul's.

So many good choices, but Cochon Butcher (very casual) stands out for me.

Restaurant Rebirth in the Warehouse district.

I keep telling people about this place. Everyone that has gone has loved it.

Small place. Check the reviews.

Drago's chargrilled oysters are the best in town. I've had numerous buddies go try them on my recommendation and they only go there for them now.

Burger - Port of Call - get there a few minutes before they open to snag a seat at the bar and order a Monsoon to start your day.

K-Paul's - still my favorite, but I haven't had Commander's Palace.

Po-boys - Johnny's (only open until 4pm) or Mahoney's (now has a FQ location).

Jacques Imos - the alligator sausage and shrimp cheesecake is incredible. Their fried chicken wasn't as good as advertised, but not bad.

Deanie's - BBQ shrimp - really anywhere for BBQ shrimp. You can google Mr B's Bistro's recipe and make it at home pretty easy. Add a little extra salt and a little extra lemon juice and bam!

The Stanley - great breakfast sandwich and grits.

Dookie Chase - great fried chicken. Skip the buffet, the rest is just average. You'll wish you'd ordered only FC because it goes lightening fast from the buffet.

Dragos - chargrilled oysters and crawfish mac-n-cheese. Everything else is average at best. Service sucks, always - it's the epitome of lazy NOLA service. Sometimes the oysters aren't scalding hot, sometimes not so much - see service.

During the oil downturn in the 80s local had a tough decision whether to cancel their CC membership or do away with Sunday dinners at Galatois. Think most chose the latter.

Commander's Palace is way past its prime. Tired menu, tired service.
Drago's in Metairie had awesome chargrilled oysters.
I'll agree with Clancy's. Great location amongst neighborhood houses, top-notch.
Sylvain's has an interior feel that you're someplace really unique; I like the crowds & food.
Arnaud's brunch is as old-school as it gets yet they manage to make it fun somehow.
Cochon was good but didn't seem especially New Orleans; it could be in any city.
Elizabeth's for b-fast is a good call.
Beignets & caf au lait at City Park. Great view, better than the French Qtr location.

La Petite Grocery and Bayona are my top two, but tons of great ones. I'd be curious what you haven't liked as I find that very hard in NO.

Commmanders is a good experience but needs some excitement, galatoire is more about the party than the food. Coquette, August, La Petite, Couchon, Compere Lapin, and Maypop are all great

Been to Mr. B's, Herbsaint, and CP. I didn't dislike any of them per se, I just wasn't blown away either. Likely a case of having overblown expectations.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Drago's. It's actually in the Hilton, not the Hyatt. But, they throw out the best grilled oysters, we hit it for lunch every time we are in NOLA.
I had a great steak at La Boca, an Argentinean steakhouse on Tchoupitoulas.
We really loved Cochon, did the chef's table and it was simply a great time and great food.
I used to be a big fan of Mulate's, but it has slipped a bit. Etouffe was still good the last time, though.
Herbsaint was solid as well.

Antoine's, Galatoires, Brennan's are good, but pricey. Maybe a little overrated,,,

Gotta say, it's hard to go wrong with food in NOLA.

Best meal I had last trip was at Atchafalaya a couple blocks off Magazine. Great brunch, great service, get a reservation.

Try Shaka if you are looking for a change of pace - also a great spot off magazine.

Went to Dragos a couple weeks ago. Table was dirty when they seated us, service was extremely slow, had finished all our other food before the chargrilled oysters arrived, chargrilled oysters were meh, and beer is $7 a bottle. We'll never go back.

Must have been a bad day as I would say their chargrilled oysters are the best in NOLA

I really liked Cafe Beignet...

And I know other's have said that Commander's Palace wasn't that great, I thoroughly enjoyed it last year,. I did the tasting menu.

Coterie for oysters on the half shell. 75 cents each from 3-7.

Another recommendation for Coquette. Get the table to do the blind tasting. Even the stuff that you might not order will surprise you. Took clients here and have sent additional folks to the restaurant and everybody has loved it.

Jacques Imo's is also good, casual and in a cool place to wander about.
