I must be really in the minority here, but I guess you have a different view when you live in Vegas for two years vs just visiting.
I love the Golden Nugget. Hotel rooms are actually quite nice for the price and it's my favorite pool in Vegas (sheerly because of the shark tank).
If you're on Fremont Street, here are the bars to check out:
* Hogs & Heifers -- It's like a real life "Coyote Ugly" and the folks there are awesome. Say hi to Chip, he's the 400ish pound bouncer - Real nice guy from the Midland/Odessa area of Texas, actually. Make sure you stick around until they start dancing on the bars. Cash only.
* The Griffin -- Laid back, very chill bar. Has a small dance area in the back, the front is just an area to relax and have a drink with some friends.
* Beauty Bar -- This one could either suck miserably or be totally awesome depending on the day and the crowd. They host a lot of small shows (DJs) and it's a cool place. Your bartender might be high (or it could be a man dressed as a woman, actually)
In terms of gambling, they're all about the same. Better rules than the Strip and cheaper tables, but it'll be an older / more hardcore gambling crowd. (Since I lived in Vegas, I used to gamble at local casinos rather than Fremont or the Strip)
