Have heard from some people that this time of year many places in Italy close up for the holidays and for the off time of year.
How much truth is there to this?

I think Italy is always a bit random with taking time off. I expect christmas eve and christmas day to be more closed, but that's all I would think.

I've heard the same thing too, but the museums are still open, and there will be places to eat too, so that's all we are concerned about

as weird as it is meeting texags people in real life, with so many ags in town at the time, we might have to do a HH in rome...

What is the conventional wisdom regarding driving a car outside Rome, as opposed to taking the train to tour Tuscany, for instance? I have four days to spend, and want the flexibility/freedom of driving, but have no idea if I'm asking for trouble.

i've never tried to drive in europe. i'm not against it, just never had a need to.

spain is the only place where we spent any meaningful time in a car but my spanish buddy was driving.

now that i've typed it out, i realize that probably doesn't help you.

So how does one get around in Italy? How extensive is the rail system (now that Mussoline is no longer running them)?

i've not yet been to italy, but everywhere else i've been, it's pretty simple to take a train from city to city (or even cheap airfare), and then take a local train, bus, tram, or taxi (rarely) to where we want to go.

we did this from barcelona to madrid (flew), then bus from madrid to grenada, bus from grenada to cordoba, train from cordoba to sevilla, and train from sevilla to madrid.

the bus we took from madrid to grenada was pretty awesome, actually. the seats were leather, and leaned way back; there was even a "stewardess" who brought snacks and drinks out. also, it had free wifi.

i love not having to worry about parking, etc. that comes with a car.

we won't be renting a car in italy, either for this coming trip, fyi.

My in laws went and they said renting a car for outside Rome was the way to go.

We plan on renting the car in Milan, taking a couple of days to make our way down to Rome, and then parking at our hotel for the rest of the time. We'll take it when we do a day trip to Paestum though, since it's 4 hours and you have to take 2 trains.
