Anyone been to Mexico City for business?

I was there for 2 weeks in August. Not exactly for business but was there in Mexico City. Any specific questions?

I will be there for business, but will have some down time. Any suggestions on things to see / do?

I used to travel to Mexico City quite regularly. What area will you be staying / working in?

What are you interested in? Museums? History? Nightlife?

Sounds dorky but I'd recommend the Turibus. Hop on, sit up top if you can, listen to the audio tour and enjoy the bus tour. Make a visit to the Anthropology museum, Castillo & the park that's there by the castle grounds, and the Zócalo.

There are tons of streets with lots of shopping near the Zócalo as well as a sinking cathedral. If you're interested go see the Basilica (antigua y moderna) and la virgen de guadalupe.

I went to the Mexico/U.S. soccer game at Estadio Azteca. That was pretty awesome...so if you can catch a fútbol game that would be fun (and crazy!).

Zochimilco is a neat touristy area. You can hop on one of the many colorful boats there and be entertained by all the music, vendors, colors, etc. plus there are several stands that sell all sorts of things.

Santa Fe is a real fancy part of town. It's the newest part of town with extremely modern buildings and architecture. There are some fabulous places to eat, including a delicious sushi place called Moshi Moshi...complete with a conveyer (sp?) belt!

My home town.....I miss it, but not its complications.

As mentioned surely try and make the Anthropology museum, and Chapultepec Castle. That open air tour bus is not a bad deal at all and you can get around a nice part of town for a day on it.

I would also go to the Zocalo and the Plaza de Las Tres Culturas, man you can just feel the history there. The pyramids just outside of the city are really cool.

As far as eats and stuff go, I would hang around the Zona Rosa, lots of good places to eat and such and relatively safe.

Much depends on where you will be staying. Santa Fe and the nice areas are really cool also, but most business travelers do not stay near there unless the company they are seeing/visiting is already there.

Overall Mexico City is truly a neat, neat city. Just be aware of your surroundings, dress down and don't be austentatios(sp).

I believe we will be spending most of our time in Polonco. Is this a nice area of the city?

it is a heck of a city - lots to do & see. You do have to be careful, watch your wallet, don't wear fancy jewerlry, etc. Careful of the cabbies - I once had one who tried to drop me off in a seedy part of town at some hoochy-coochy club (so he could get a kick-back I'm sure). But really it's a fun town & you'll have a blast.

Polanco is one of the best areas. Very upscale...lots of nice restaurants and bars in the neighborhood. I stayed at the JW Marriott when I visited a few years ago. Chapultapec Park, the Anthropology Museum and Zona Rosa(if you don't mind a little hike) are all within walking distance.

I spent a fair amount of time in Polanco because I was visiting a friend that works in that area. Like previous poster said, that's a nice area. Some good restaurants, bars/pubs, hotels (Hotelera - Mariott, W, Presidente Intercontinental), etc. The auditorio is right there and you can hop on a Turibus right in front of it. There's also a Metro stop (orange line maybe(?) at Auditorio). The anthropology museum, castle grounds within walking distance. Good spot to be. I only used a few cabs and never had a problem. The metro was super easy and didn't have any problems using that form of transportation as well.

so much to do in that city. i'd also recommend "the men's club" if you're sans wife.

I gave RoyToy some recommendations w/pictures in the Travel forum a couple of years ago. Someone with stars might be able to search for that and link it.

And...I love DF. It's a really great city!

Just returned from the trip. Unfortunately (or fortunately, however you look at it) I was working almost the entire time from morning until night. Had very little time to do much else.

The city was beautiful. Parts were very cultured, as much as anywhere in the US, and then parts were very 3rd worldish. I'm always amazed at the contrast.

I spent most of my time in Polanco, Sante Fe and the Reforma areas of the city. I was also able to go see the pyramids outside the city. That was an amazing experience.

I'm glad you had a good trip! You were in some nice part of D.F. for sure. Glad you made it out to the pyramids - those are quite fascinating to see in person.

helluva hike to get out there, though. think it took us over an hour to get out to that area from reforma.

Teotihuacan is worth seeing if you have time for a little trip outside the city.
