Well, this is probably gonna be a long one. Our honeymoon consisted of the five countries (with a day in Boston on the way there, and technically a day in London, which may or may not be posted in here). We began by flying to Sarajevo. We had two nights there and were actually really impressed by it. Everyone was nice and they did a great job restoring the downtown area to look more like the old Turkish markets.

We figured if we would have a beer at Cheers, it would have been in our Boston part of the trip....but no, it was in Bosnia

We did not quite know why this was in our room, but since it was our honeymoon, it may have been needed

They had a lot of cafes and bars that have tables outside.

We spent two days in Sarajevo, and then we headed off to Mostar, Bosnia. We did not really run into any American tourists in Sarajevo, which is a nice change from normal places. Mostar, which was closer to Croatia, had quite a bit more tourists. It is more or less famous for their bridge over the river. We stayed at a museum/house that was decorated in traditional Bosnian decorations...

After Mostar, we headed to Croatia. Bus took about 4 hours, much of it was along the coast which was really pretty. We had 3 nights in Croatia in the old town, we had booked an apartment there that was 50m or so from their so called beach. Much of the beaches there were pebbles/rocks, so not much sand. We liked Dubrovnik, but it was overrun with cruise ships and tourists. Prices reflected this as well. Later, we went on a boat to an island near Dubrovnik for more beaches.

After Dubrovnik, we headed down to Budva, Montenegro. I had booked a beachfront hotel, but the hotel screwed up our reservation, so they upgraded us to their more luxury resort. I did not complain...we had 4 nights there with a Spa and nicer pools/beaches. There were a lot of Russians there though, but I knew that would happen. Nightlife there was interesting to say the least, most bars had women wearing minimal things dancing to try to get people to go in.....it worked on us at three bars....

Our room included a window from the bathroom to the bedroom....

Women dancing at the bar....

We ended up renting a car in Montenegro to try to drive to Kosovo. It ended up failing due to the lack of good roads, so we tried to see the sites of Montenegro instead. We first went to a town called Kotor, which is sort of a fjord town but not technically a fjord. The cathedral in the hill is called Ostrag. It was a pain to get up to as buses and trucks were going up and down a one lane road on a cliff on a tall mountain. Fun to drive, but not too much fun for my wife....

Tour buses coming down roads they should not be on.....

From Montenegro, we headed to Albania. Getting there can be a pain using public transport, so we jumped on a tourist bus going down there on a day trip with our bags and just left when they get to Albania. Was a lot easier than the 8 hours it would take on public transport.

Albania was interesting. There are bunkers all over the countryside. They were built by the old ruler who was afraid of someone invading, which never happened. I believe the number is somewhere around 750,000 of them. We started in Shkoder then Durres, and then onto the capital Tirana.

Shkoder

Durres

Tirana

We did not know what this would entail in Albania....so we refrained from putting this on the other side of the door

I think they were in their presidential elections there. Apparently a political rally there involves extremely loud music, kegs of beer, and American flags. A lot of American flags....

We then rented a car to drive to Ohrid, Macedonia. We did this because we wanted to get one more country in and the guide book really liked Ohrid. We were quite impressed as well.

Something tells me this McD's is not real...

Back across the border into Albania....with more bunkers

Ill probably add the London pictures later today....

Great report! (sorry about your tech exposure...)

My folks were in Dubrovnik a a few months ago - they said it was beautiful, but not much to do. they'd found a bar that was through a hole in the city wall, down some narrow steps, and set up on the boulders along the water - one of the coolest beers they'd ever drank - did you happen upon this place?

You cant really see anything, but these are the blocks that they were talking about. That was the beach about 50m from our apartment and where we laid out for the first whole day we were there. We never actually had a beer from the bar itself though, I just ran back to the apartment and grabbed 2 each time we needed some.

As for Dubrovnik, it was really overpriced. It is a great town to see, it looks really pretty how they have redone it. But, during the day, all you hear is english in the streets, americans taking pictures and restaurants trying to sell you overpriced food. The first dinner we had there, I went to some small side street and found a pizza place that I saw on a drinking TV show, told the guy that I saw him on it, and he gave us a free shot of some homemade liquor. But, the next two nights, we just went to the farmers market and cooked food in our kitchen to save money. We did go out one night there....the town is definitely happening at night. We went to some bar and met with some american girls, and we decided to go to a club on the beach. We get there and try ordering a beer and the lady says they dont have any of the cheaper beers listed only some of the more expensive ones. Anyways we order it and it comes out in a .25L bottle, for something like 8 bucks. None of us were impressed and the club was just blaring remixed 90s music so it wasnt that good. We ended up leaving and when we left the bouncers asked one of the girls why we were leaving, she said it was just not worth the money....the bouncer turned to her and said "cheap f****n Americans"....which was incredible rude and sort of left us in shock that he said that.

That was really the only bad experience we had that trip....

No problem....

I am sure that most of those places (with the exception of Albania) will probably become over run with tourists before long. Bosnia was still cheap and had a lot of things to offer. Macedonia/Albania were the cheapest though, we had a great 3 course italian meal with wine and beer for under 20 bucks. And the food was really good (even had enough to get take-home boxes).
