What in the hell did you get for Johan Santana?

not enough

We lost him in the Rule V draft. He hadn't shown much to that point. He had only had three years of pitching experience and the Astros decided against putting a single A pitcher on the 40 man roster. The move looks really bad now, but at the time there was nothing that pointed to Santana being more than an average pitcher.

So didn't you guys get something for him or does Rule V mean a team gets nothing?

I think the Rule V draft deal means you get some extra late round picks in the amateur draft.

You look at that and then the decision to hold onto Hidalgo over Abreu for the expansion draft after the '97 season and you just can't help but be sad.

I'm not sure what the compensation for a Rule V pick is...but I do know that if the team that takes the player does not keep him on their big league roster the entire next season, the player goes back to the original team. In Santana's case, the Astros didn't think he was ready for the majors and didn't have a place for him on the 40 man roster, so he was left unprotected. The Twins picked him and kept him on their roster the whole season even with a 6+ ERA...worked out for them in the long run obviously.

Marlins had Santana too if my memory is correct.

with all the talk about everett recently, i cant help but think about how the stros gave up carlos guillen in the randy johnson deal. he is a career .291 hitter with a .360 OBP.

Other than Schilling...do you see a theme? Astros give up on minority players too early...yet they give every chance to Lane, Everett, Ensberg, etc because they're clean cut white guys.

If I had a dollar for every time I saw a title with "Astors" in it...

When you have no good arguement, use the race card. The reason that those guys were let go is that they were not doing very well and didn't show very much potential to improve. Lane, Everett, and Ensberg were doing well early on and showed alot of potential.

guys, every team gives up great future players in the minors. It doesnt just apply to the Astros, it applies to ALL teams.

We also gave up on Wade Miller, Kirk Sarloos, Tim Redding, Darryl Ward, Scot Elarton, ...

We do get some right. Ask the Red Soxs how the Larry Anderson trade went for them.

Difference is that the guys we hold onto propell us to division titles and playoff appearances.

Yes even though we didn't get sh** for these guys except for Otsuka. Look I am not trying to bash just wanted to know who you got in return. The Rangers have not been on the winning end of too many trades in the past. Judging from the list above it looks like the stros haven't either.

We got Randy Johnson in the Garcia/Guillen deal, I'm still ok with that trade even though it was a half year rental. We had a good shot to go deep in the playoffs that year, just didn't work out. We got Willy Taveras in the Rule 5 draft as well a couple years ago and I think we got Luke Scott in a trade the same year.

Alot of our moves, especially since Hunsicker left, have not worked out though

Yea since Doug Melvin was fired the Rangers have been circleing the drain as well.
