How long do you want to ignore this user?
From the Trib:

quote:
The Schmidt debate. There's a huge difference of opinion in baseball circles about Jason Schmidt, who appears to have become a target for the Cubs. His velocity was down 3 to 5 m.p.h. in 2006, to the low 90s, but he made 32 starts and held hitters to a .238 average.

He had been sidelined for parts of four of the previous five seasons, causing some to wonder if Wrigley Field has enough whirlpool space to accommodate Kerry Wood, Mark Prior and Schmidt.

The Cubs denied an Internet report that they had offered him three years at $15 million per year, but they soon might offer something like that. They didn't sweat the size of contracts when signing Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, Mark DeRosa and Henry Blanco, so it's hard to see them doing that with two or three holes to fill in the rotation.

I don't always agree with Phil Rogers but I like his thinking in this article.

Rumors of us offering Julio Lugo. I'm starting to think the the Schmidt thing was blown way out of proportion. It sure is nice to hear the cubs names being mention when talking about the top free agents.

Lugo in Center would almost guarantee a trade involving Jacque, at least I hope. I'd rather keep Pie and Murton.

quote:
The only person at Wrigley Field on Thursday who seemed to know for sure whether Alfonso Soriano will play winter ball in the Dominican Republic was Cubs general manager Jim Hendry, and his decision wasn't surprising.

The Cubs conducted a news conference to unveil the player who signed the richest contract in team history, and Hendry would prefer his eight-year, $136 million investment not tempt fate. A century of not winning a World Series can create that kind of caution.

''I told him I would prefer he not play,'' Hendry said. ''And he was agreeable to that.

''Obviously, in his country, a lot of people play. Some guys who have been MVPs have played winter ball. That's a great thing in Latin America. There's a lot of pride in that season. Almost every great pitcher from Latin America has played in the Caribbean World Series.

''But he was very accommodating to what we want him to do. He's already visited our academy in the Dominican and spent some time with our young kids. He was a breath of fresh air to be around.''

Up next for Hendry are the winter meetings, where he'll look to acquire pitching help. Jason Schmidt, Barry Zito and Gil Meche are some of the names that have been surfacing. Hendry also will look for left-handed hitting.

Hendry's aggressiveness convinced Soriano to choose the Cubs.

''What I heard from the front office is they want to win, and that's why I'm here,'' he said. ''You say the money, but I know how I feel about the game. I love the game so much. I'm not here just because of the money. Two or three teams offered more money than Chicago, but I love the game and what they said to me.

''That's the motivation for me to come here and play. It's not the money. This team has a very good chance of winning the World Series.''

Soriano is from the same hometown as Sammy Sosa, and while the two used to talk about playing in Chicago, Soriano said they're not close and haven't spoken since Soriano agreed to the deal.

''I don't know anything about Chicago,'' Soriano said. ''The most important thing is [manager Lou Piniella] and Jim saying, 'We want to win.' That's the key.''

Soriano isn't sure which outfield position he'll play, but he said he's not concerned about battling the sun during the Cubs' numerous day games.

''I'll have to make adjustments,'' he said. ''I've done that in the past. It won't be a problem for me.''

Soriano was asked if he'll feel more pressure to succeed because of his huge contract.

''Maybe more pressure because you know people see me as $136 million,'' he said. ''But I see me as the guy who can help and play every day.''

He's saying a lot of the right things. Let's hope his attitude keeps up.

In other news the sox have re-signed Podsednik which means they probably won't be interested in Jacque anymore.

I just posted the Baseball Prospectus Winter Meetings Preview. Please contribute your thoughts on the Cubs and other teams.

Joe Sheehan nailed the Astros pretty hard in the article, so I imagine I'll get accused of trashing the Astros again.

I saw it before I clicked on this one. I'm definitely excited to see what Hendry's going to do.

What I've seen while browsing the rumor mills:

- If the Rocks can't come to an agreement with Jason Jennings the Cubs are mentioned as a possible trade destination.

- A trade involving Jacque is more likely than one involving Murton

- Then of course there's the ongoing Schmidt, Lilly, Meche, Padilla talks.

Padilla...do we really want him. He was somewhat solid but from what I've heard some Ranger fan friends say he's somewhat of a headcase. Him and Z together could be disastrous.

I also don't see a lot of talk about Zito. I know the Cubs aren't as interested, is that because he'd rather be on the West Coast or his price tag?

His comments on the stros are pretty much right on. The fact is there isn't much competition in the NL to keep a mediocre offense like theirs out of contention. Their WS appearance in '05 shows how bad the NL has been.

Cubs have made an offer to Ted Lilly.

is it me, but it is great to be a sucky free agent pitcher this offseason.
WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AgShaun, you are correct.

Buster Olney called it the worst class in the 31-year history of free agency, and yet, the money is flying around like it is the winter of A-Rod, ManRam, and Jeter all over again.

That's what they said about last year though.

Good luck with Zito, WestTx. The more I think about it the more I wish he could be a Cub.

zito scares me for hte price tag. Don't think he is worth it. Just doesn't seem as dominant as he use to be. Still a very good pitcher, but you have to over pay to get half way decent pitchers anyway.
bluestainedivy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
True, I don't think he was dominant more than two years. I'd agree his price tag is the main reason I would agree to stay away. Zito lives and dies by his curve ball if it works he's nasty but if not he's pretty tame. I think that he could be a good leader though and a mellow enough of a personality to balance out Z's.
AgShaun00
How long do you want to ignore this user?
not sure if i was in a hitters park that I would sign someone who depends on the hanger too much myself.
WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Zito is going to cost an arm and a leg, but if the Rangers are going to sign a big starting pitcher this year (and they need to), then he's the one to do it. I'll tell you what, the Rangers can take Zito and the Cubs take Schmidt. That would be a win-win for everyone (well, everyone but the competition in the AL West and the NL Central).

I agree with the concern about Zito's curve. When it's curving, he's unhittable. When it's not, he's, well, he's plenty hittable.

As for the issue of him pitching in a hitter's park, it's interesting you bring that up, since that very thing was addressed by Mike Hindman as part of his "Hot Stove Notes" for the Newberg Report this morning:
quote:
When the issue of Zito possibly coming to Arlington first arose, this was what I looked at: over the past three years, Zito is 5-1 with a 5.28 ERA in seven starts at Ameriquest Field, the worst of any park where he’s had at least five starts during that span.

But I looked a little harder at it this morning and here is what I found: His three year cumulative ERA was damaged by a couple of bad starts back in 2004, Zito’s off year. He posted a 7.47 ERA in three starts in Arlington that summer. Last year, he went 2-0 with a 3.74 ERA, holding Texas to a .160 batting average in 22.2 innings. In 2003, he went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in three starts spanning 20 innings.

Moreover, in five starts in Anaheim over the past three years, Zito has a 0.76 ERA and he’s held the Angels to a .162 average there. He’s held the Mariners to a .239 average while posting a 2.89 ERA at Safeco Field over the past three years.

Yes, as many of you pointed out to me yesterday, he’s a fly ball pitcher (0.89 G/F last year), but he’s not especially homer-prone. Zito gave up 27 big flies last year. Same as Andy Pettitte and fewer than Freddy Garcia, Mark Buehrle, Ted Lilly, Nate Robertson and Chris Young. He gave up just 26 homers in 2005, 28 in his "off year" of 2004 and a mere 19 back in 2003.

Moreover, Zito surrendered just 42 doubles last year, which is a solid figure. Roy Oswalt gave up 55, Pettitte gave up 53, Jon Garland 51, Jeff Suppan 49, Freddy Garcia 46.... In 2005, Zito gave up just 33 doubles and in 2004 (his off year), he gave up 46 (Kenny Rogers gave up 59 that year). In 2003, Zito gave up just 28 doubles.

As an aside, the Newberg Report is such a great asset to have as a fan. All teams should be so lucky as to have uber-fans like Jamey Newberg and Mike Hindman that publish their thoughts and analysis via email and website on a daily basis and then annually with a 300 page bound edition.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm disappointed with the lack of livelihood on this thread.

Here are some rumors to spice things up:

Jason Jennings
quote:
Cubs general manager Jim Hendry called his Colorado Rockies counterpart Dan O'Dowd about the availability of right-hander Jason Jennings. And why not? Jennings, who compiled a 3.78 earned-run average in 32 starts while based at Denver's Coors Field last season, is one year from free agency and seeking a bigger extension than Colorado is offering. He is believed, however, more likely headed to Minnesota or Houston. ... According to major-league sources, the Rockies asked the Cubs about left-hander Rich Hill, who is considered an untouchable. Hendry has offered right fielder Jacque Jones and indicated a willingness to deal infielder Ronny Cedeno or some other young pitchers but now believes he'll have to bring a third team into the talks to get a trade done with the Rockies.

quote:
The Cubs have joined the Jason Jennings derby, offering outfielder Jacque Jones. That doesn't figure to get a deal done in light of the fact the Rockies would then have to find someplace to trade Jones for a young starting pitcher. Houston, Minnesota, the Mets and Texas also have been actively pursuing Jennings.

Cliff Floyd:
quote:
Mets left fielder Cliff Floyd has been rumored headed to the North Side since he was packaged in a proposed deal for Sammy Sosa two years ago. New York's brass eventually nixed the deal, and now Floyd is a free agent. Hendry and Floyd have remained tight since Hendry recruited the Thornwood product as the head coach at Creighton. Off-season surgery on Floyd's left Achilles' tendon hasn't scared off potential suitors, and the Cubs, Oakland, Baltimore, Seattle and Cleveland are awaiting medical reports.

Murton and Pie
quote:
The addition of Alfonso Soriano and the pursuit of guys like Cliff Floyd and Kenny Lofton has raised public concern about the possibility that GM Jim Hendry might deal away Matt Murton, arguably the best hitter to come from the Cubs' system in a decade. That's not going to happen, nor are the Cubs going to trade their center fielder of the future, Felix Pie.

"No Cluelio" Lugo
quote:
Boston is considered the front-runner for Julio Lugo, who reportedly is seeking a four-year deal worth about $36 million. The New York Mets also are in the hunt, and both are looking at Lugo as a shortstop. The Cubs already have received word from Lugo that he would be receptive to moving to center field, and his relationship with manager Lou Piniella is a plus. Lugo has until Thursday to accept or decline arbitration from the Dodgers, where he was traded from Tampa Bay last summer. Lugo likely will decline, meaning the club that signs him must give up its 2007 first-round draft pick as compensation. If Lugo signs elsewhere, the ageless Kenny Lofton could be a one-year stopgap

Jason Schmidt
quote:
Jason Schmidt also is on the Cubs radar. Though he is rumored to be leaning to a West Coast team—either the Dodgers, Padres or his hometown Mariners.

Baldelli has been thrown out there as a possibility again. No real substance behind it other than the potential.
WestTxAg06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Baldelli's an interesting idea (I'd like him in Texas), but could you trade him without giving up Pie or Murton?
bluestainedivy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
For some reason I like Lilly, but when I look at his stats they aren't real compelling. He's about 1 game over .500 and his ERA is well over 4.

Here are his numbers:
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/team/player.jsp?player_id=150404

I've also heard a lot of rumors relating to a Kenny Lofton return.

Cliff Floyd continues to be mentioned but I don't know where we would put him in the field. He'd definitely be a great bat off the bench though.
bluestainedivy
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Also I'm seeing more talk about Jacque going to Colorado for Jennings. The two versions have the Rockies trading Jacque or Hendry needing to orchestrate a 3-team trade.

It's getting exciting boys.
