Greatest leadoff man of all time.

One of the few players of the last 50 years who could be in a lineup with the Mays, Aarons, and Ruths of the world and not have to take a step back for anyone.

He had some pretty insane stats. 130 stolen bases one season. 66 stolen bases at age 39. Career OBP at .400 through 24 seasons.

Went to a number of games in Ricky's final season ... the thing I loved the most about him was that every time fans would yell his name and call out to him on the field he raises his hand to the crowd and acknowledged them. Told me everything I needed to know about Ricky

One that I saw somewhere that is mind-blowing is that he walked 796 times to lead off an inning. A guy that no pitcher in their right mind would want to see on base to start an inning by their own hand, yet Henderson had the eye and plate discipline to be able to work that many walks to lead an inning off.

Damn near hit 300 HRs, too.

In my mind, given the way the game is played now, his 1406 steals is as safe a record as Cy Young's 511 wins.

Also, talk about your 1-2 heavyweight baseball accomplishments on a single day.

May 1, 1991.

Henderson breaks Lou Brock's stolen base record in the afternoon.

Later that night, Nolan Ryan throws his 7th no-hitter.

I don't know if either of these are records but he played for nine different teams in his career and changed teams 12 times. He had five different stints with the As. Apart from some of his impressive stats I find this kind of amazing.

Elly de la Cruz led the Majors with 67 steals this year.

Rickey had at least 65 in 9 different seasons.

He had 31 steals in 92 games in 2000 at age 41
He had 25 steals in 123 games in 2001 at age 42

In his first year of pro ball at age 17, he had 29 steals in 46 games, hit .336. and had an OPS of .985.

In his first 150+ game season in the majors, which was 1980, he scored 111 runs, stole 100 bases, walked 117 times and only struck out 54 times.

The strike year of 1981 robbed him of 54 games. Cost him around 25 more steals and 35 more runs on the ledger.

After his rookie year of 1980, he never had more strikeouts than walks in a season until 2001 when he was 42 years old.

For his career, he stole more than 100 bases against the Indians (103), the Twins (110), the Rangers (101) and the Blue Jays (110). That's 424 steals against just 4 teams. He also had 99 agaisnt the Oriole and 98 against the Royals.
