Personal opinion... I think the Astros got back far more than they should've expected.

Great deal for the Astros. 3 controllable MLB players to fill existing holes. Cam Smith may not come out of ST on the MLB roster, but a 1st Rounder out of FSU having success in AA at 21 has a bright future soon.

IIRC, he was originally seen as a T5 maybe T10 draft pick and slipped to 14.

Got a great return for what is basically a rental for the cubs

Most importantly, got something for him as opposed to losing him for nothing ij return after this year

Cam Smith is an IF version of Braden Montgomery. He actually had a higher BA in college in 2024 than Monty. Fewer HR though.

Smith hit .387 at FSU in 2024 with 16 HR and a 1.142 OPS. Monty hit .322 with 27 HR and a 1.187 OPS.

Both have the reputation of being great dudes in the clubhouse and off the field and will make bigtime endorsement money once they make the bigs.

He didn't "go" anywhere. He was traded ahead of the final year of his deal.
