Oof. Kristofferson and Rose back to back. RIP.

I'm sure he slid into heaven head first.
Dang I was out of the country for a few weeks and I didn't catch Kris Kristofferson dying. I also didn't realize he was 88 years old.

I think they should've put rose in the HOF. But RIP.

Rose was a great player. But he was a worse human being. Total scumbag. You don't have to be a saint to be worthy of the HoF, but you can't bet on baseball.

Keep him out of the Hall of Fame forever.

One of the sorriest guys to ever walk the planet.

I would be interested how many with this take think Clemens is and upstanding citizen who deserves the hall

He is sorry, too, so was Barry Bonds…all of them deserved what they've gotten for cheating blatantly
But not all of them got punished. Ortiz? Thomas? Biggio? Piazza? Jr? Bagwell? Pudge? Chipper? Vlad? Thome? Edgar? Are we sure all these guys are clean?

Dikembe Mutombo met him at the gate with a finger wag.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

Impressive by the Reds and their fans.

CINCINNATI -- Thousands of fans streamed into Great American Ball Park despite steady rain Sunday to pay respects to Pete Rose, baseball's career hits leader who died Sept. 30 at the age of 83.
The 14-hour visitation, in honor of Rose's jersey number, was arranged by the Cincinnati Reds with cooperation from Rose's daughters, Fawn and Kara, who exchanged hugs, stories and even some tears with fans.
"We wanted to do something like this," said Rick Walls, executive director of the Reds Hall of Fame. "You could see from the turnout, it means a lot to the people here. It's a moving experience."
The Reds plan to honor Rose on "Pete Rose Day" when they play the White Sox on May 14 with first pitch planned for 7:14 p.m., in homage to his No. 14.
Rose, known as "Charlie Hustle" for his unbridled passion for the game, was the engine behind Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine" clubs that won back-to-back World Series titles in 1975 and 1976.
A 17-time All-Star, the switch-hitting Rose played on three World Series winners. He was the National League MVP in 1973 and World Series MVP two years later. He holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890). But no milestone approached his 4,256 hits, surpassing his hero Ty Cobb's 4,191.
Rose agreed to a permanent ban from Major League Baseball in 1989 following an investigation by MLB that determined he bet on Reds games from 1985 to 1987 while playing for and managing the team. Two years later, the Hall of Fame barred players on the permanent ineligible list from the Hall ballot.

Despite his indiscretions away from the diamond, fans arrived as early as 4 a.m. Sunday to honor Rose, slowly passing by an urn containing his ashes and a table displaying his bright red Reds Hall of Fame induction suit jacket and other memorabilia while a highlight video of his illustrious career played on the concourse video boards.
Fans left flowers and other mementos at the Rose statue located just outside the main entrance to the ballpark.
"He was a guy you thought was going to live forever," longtime Reds fan Bob Augspurger said. "When I heard the news, obviously it was sad. Baseball lost its greatest ambassador."
Fawn Rose said in a statement, "We are deeply moved by the overwhelming love and support from the people of Cincinnati, the entire baseball community, and fans across the world as we mourn the loss of our beloved Dad, Grandpa, and Brother, Pete Rose."
The Reds plan to honor Rose on "Pete Rose Day" when they play the Chicago White Sox on May 14 with first pitch planned for 7:14 p.m., also in homage to his No. 14.

Like him or not he was one of the best players to ever play the game. He's the kind of player you want on your team.

RIP. But he's never getting in. His lawyer felt like it would be worse to wait until he's dead, and I tend to agree. He was either worthy or he isn't. Almost cruel to wait until he was dead because it basically says "we left you out for being an ahole, not because you gambled on your team's games"
If that were the criteria, Ty Cobb would never have gotten in.

I think the myth of Cobb being hated universally was perpetuated by Al Stump. There is a newer biography by Charles Leerhsen that does a good job debunking many aspects or Cobb lore that are portrayed in movies.

Kind of crazy, I doubt many posters really know that much about Ty Cobb. People in Detroit seem to love him.

Unlike in the portrayal of Field of Dreams, Joe Jackson and Cobb were friends. When Cobb stumbled across Jackson working in a liquor store after he had been banned from baseball, they had this exchange

n April 1946, a particularly notable out-of-towner Ty Cobb paid "Shoeless Joe" a visit at his liquor store in West Greenville. As the oft-repeated story goes, Jackson gave his old friend a glance but said not a word as he pretended to wipe down an already clean counter. After picking out a bottle of whiskey, an incredulous Cobb spoke up. "Don't you know me, Joe?" he asked. Jackson replied, "Sure, I know you, Ty, but I wasn't sure you wanted to know me. A lot of them don't." As the pair reminisced about old times, Cobb declared: "I'll tell you how well I remember you. When I got the idea I was a good hitter, I'd stop and take a good look at you. Then I knew I could stand some improvement."

I'd be disappointed to find out he was actually a nice guy. I like that some of the greats were *******s. It reminds me that we haven't changed that much.

Leerhsen's book is fascinating and Stump's portrayal of Cobb was literally criminal. Too bad he (Stump) didn't live long enough to face the consequences.

But Leerhsen sure didn't paint Cobb as a nice guy. Very complex, for sure. He did have a compassionate streak, especially other players who were down on their luck as the story with Joe Jackson shows, but also a hair trigger temper for sure. He couldn't tolerate being shown the smallest amount of disrespect.
