Fwiw that's literally pronounced "ze-ro" spelled in katakana, which is the alphabet the Japanese use for loanwords.

"Rei" is often how standard 0 is written and read. Though "zero" is used plenty colloquially.
Well yeah. Everyone knows that.

Sure, some luck is there.

However, it just highlights difference between the Astros organization and Blue Jays organization. It makes you wonder how the Blue Jays didn't see this.

Also, while the Astros have lost a lot of brain power, this at least tells me the pitching team is still quality and they should continue to do what they can to keep them.

I'm sure playing in a division with 3 terrible teams helps a lot.

Trading for Kikuchi is working out muuuuuuch better than the Sanchez/Biagini one with Toronto back in '19.

It helps to an extent but not as much since the scheduling changed. AL East fans will still try to use this excuse, but we've seen how the Astros fared against their division this season.

I must have missed Kuchi's no hitter

Not really.

Now with the balanced schedule we're not playing those crappy teams near as much.

Interesting discussion on KC on MLB radio. They question why KC picked up Tommy Pham. Apparently he came in and immediately questioned the clubhouse commitment to winning. And of course pissed off everyone in the clubhouse.

I said it at the time that he's a clubhouse cancer and questioned this move. Mathtradamus strikes again.
Is that a cancer? Sounds like he wants to win and has a unique perspective. He has postseason experience with the Cards, Rays, Padres, and DBacks. He also has been on some bad teams like the White Sox earlier this year and teams that feel short of their runs with 24 Cards, 23 Mets, & 22 Red Sox.

Maybe he went about it the wrong way, but the guy has fire and he wants to win.
I don't know anything about Tommy Pham's character except that he once punched a teammate in the face about fantasy football.

Now that teammate was Joc Peterson, who I have also very much wanted to punch. And I have also wanted to punch people in the face about fantasy football. So no judgment.

I'm just saying Tommy Pham might not exactly be Justin Verlander.
Joc was a Giant, Pham was a Red. Not teammates. Just FYI.

I think Pham is a psycho. But if he's on your team then he's your psycho.

Oh yeah that totally changes things.

10th stop since 2018 despite being a productive player backs up Mathguy's theory a lot more than the theory of Tommy being this generation's Michael Jordan, punching guys and winning championships.

Pham seems like one of those try-hard dorks that has to let everyone else know how "alpha" he is.

When he first got here he did say that he was surprised at all the preparation the Astros did. All the video they watched and all that stuff. I'm sure part of it is luck but seeing and being part of a winning organization after being in toronto he's wanting to put in the work and learn from some of the other pitchers we got. What a crazy turnaround this pitching staff has done this season. Its pretty amazing to see.

Does anybody remember a pitching staff that has done something like this? Closest team I can remember is the 90s Braves with Maddux, Glavine and Smoltz. But the Astros are definitely 5 deep and it could be 6 with JV about to get better.

Roger Clemens, 13-8, 1.87 ERA

Brandon Backe, 10-8, 4.76 ERA
Wandy Rodriguez, 10-10, 5.53 ERA
Ezequiel Astacio, 3-6, 5.37 ERA

Too bad that team didn't have the same kind of offense as the arguably better 2004 version.

He was an auto out at the plate and looked scare.. as opposed to Backe.. he was good for an RBI and a hit each game he pitch.. yea he had 4.76.. but he was a workhorse for us that year.

Wandy had a good career. I loved watching him throw his looping curve ball.

While I'm on that topic.
Oswalts fastball looked like it rose and increased speed.
Devenski's circle change is up there too, deadly arm side break on that pitch.

Anyone else have any notable pitcher/pitch combos they enjoyed watching?

Charlie Morton's curve

No specific pitches but Cole's 2019 season is the most dominant I've ever seen.

Roy wouldn't have been fazed by the pitch clock whatsoever.
