This reminds me of the story of the young widower at his wife's funeral. He's sobbing and inconsolable about how lonely he's going to be, and his best friends says "Bill, don't worry, you're a young man, you're handsome, you've got a good job, you'll marry again". Bill turns to him with tears running down his face and says "Sure, but what am I supposed to do TONIGHT?"

A nice quiet day in the MLB giving us an easy chance to move to -3 in both division and WC standings

speaking of Abreu...no one has picked him up

Rome hinted at possibly needing an extra arm this series with how over used the bullpen has been.

Only arms I imagine are available today are Montero and Hader and Luis Contreras. I would think we send King down and bring up Dylan Coleman, Nick Hernandez or Kaleb Ort.

We better hope Brown goes 7+ innings today because the bullpen situation is ugly.

I guess Abreu could get us an inning as well. He's had a lot of days off previous to yesterday.

I'd be ok sending Seth down to bring someone else back up in our bullpen revolving door. The young kid will be back in time for his next turn through the rotation right?

Jos Abreu's release makes Montero the only remaining piece of Crane's ill-fated tenure as a baseball operations executive. The day after he dismissed Click in 2022, Crane engineered a three-year, $34.5 million contract for Montero, a man with a career 88 ERA+ and 1.45 WHIP.

According to Baseball Reference, Montero has been worth minus-0.4 wins above replacement since signing his contract. Add it to the minus-1.6 bWAR Abreu accrued, and it appears Crane might have misallocated the $93 million he handed out.

Oof.

I may be misremembering this but I think LA owes Shohei the remaining part of his deferred contract in a lump sum.

Would have been nice if we could defer the Abreu money and pay him $1M for the next 30 years

Bonilla's last game was October 7, 2001, as the Astros beat the Cardinals 9-2 at Busch Stadium to win the NL Central. Shane Reynolds got the win, Darryl Kile the loss.

Our starting lineup that day:
Biggio, Lugo, Bagwell, Berkman, Alou, Castilla, Hidalgo, Eusebio, Reynolds
Glenn Barker and Chris Truby came off the bench
Castilla grounded into his 22nd double play of the year
Baggy hit his 39th homer
Berkman went 1 for 3 to wrap up a season with a .331 average and an 1.051 OPS

Albert Pujols was a rookie It was also Mark McGwire's last year, as he went Joey Gallo with 29 HR , 64 RBI and a .197 average.

Most impressively, it was 22 years, 8 months, 24 days ago.

Lopes & Cabbage in the top 10 wRC+ for AL Rookies (min 50 PA).

While we don't exactly have any rookie pitching standouts, especially in the same realm as Miller or Gil. But Dubin & Spaghetti crack the top 15 in WAR for rookies.

Not too shabby for an example farm system.

Wife and I once drove into Canada on Canada day… everything was closed so we just turned around and went back. They also almost didn't let us in because we had Texas plates and they were convinced we had guns.

The more I see the less open I am becoming to trading Loperfido.

That opposite field base hit he hit yesterday was damn impressive. Probably should've been fielded but the #Bman was playing in.

Regardless pretty impressive to see him hit the ball that hard down the 3B line.

Abreu
  • Tied in 10th in appearances at 39. Tyler Rogers leads baseball with 43.
  • Tied in 21st in IP for a reliever.
  • On pace for 76 appearances. His previous high was 72 last year.

Scott

  • Ted in 24th in appearances at 37.
  • 10th in IP for a reliever.
  • On pace for 82.2 IP. Last year that would have been tied in 4th for all RP and led baseball in 2022.

We gotta stop calling their # quite so much.

I assume getting Verlander back and then adding Garcia to the staff would help with this. That would mean a starter could shift to longer relief. I'm not sure if it would work on an MLB roster, but it makes sense to me for the Astros to tandem Garcia and Arrighetti, which hopefully would give the pen a rest day.

Garcia and LMJ cannot get here soon enough. JV back will help too. I believe their numbers will go down once those boys get back.

Yes and no. They should help, but our SP IP & RP IP are in the middle of the pack. It's not like we're special in a way that relies on the BP more so than most teams.

Seth is way up there too. I think it comes down to trusting Dubin & Montero more and being willing to use Pressly in a role outside of just the 8th inning setup. That should help those other guys a little. Plus we've stayed healthy across the board. Blessing, yes, but also means we're using the same guys over and over without IL stints.
