this is a 400+ page book I ghostwrote in 2022 about a time-traveling ninja, that's right. I'm now doing some touchups to it for the client. At one point , the ninja he visits his parents in an alternate 1980 NYC and I slipped in there that the Astros had beaten the Phillies in the world Series behind MVP JR Richard and it made it past the editor to the final cut.

Can someone explain what makes playing 1B so hard? Honest question.

Is it having the spatial awareness to always know where the bag is when you have the other infielders firing missiles at you across the diamond and being sure to keep your foot on the bag when catching it? I can understand that needing to drill moving to the bag to receive throw outs but it doesn't seem like a professional athlete should have too much trouble developing this pretty quickly...even if they haven't spent their whole career playing the position.

I realize there are nuances to playing every position but it seems like 1B is always kind of differentiated the other infield positions.

let's be honest...

the mantra of "first base is really a hard position to play or learn"

is being used as cover for the Abreu situation

once Abreu is finally DFA'd -- several players will miraculously make great strides in their defense...and be ready to start at first

You would be surprised. It takes a lot of flexibility and quick hands. A lot of guys can't stretch and scoop well enough to be a big league first baseman. That's why Yordan didn't work out there.

At bagwell's peak muscle mass, a guy could have tried to slap a hit and the ball would have richocheted off Bagwelll's muscles and out of the stadium.

Play first base is probably second only to catcher in terms of difficulty of technique. The ability and skill aren't necessarily the issue but proper technique is huge. You touch the ball twice as often as anyone not in the battery. The majority of the plays involve catching balls thrown 90+ mph while blindly finding the base behind you and reading the throw to position your body as the go between. You have to receive the throw as best you can while removing one of the central reactive abilities of athleticism, the ability to move your feet around.

You also have to do this at an elite clip. The worst first basemen field at a .99+ clip. The average shortstop is around .97 while second and third are .98 and .96 respectively. You can stash a bad fielder at second because they only have 4-5 plays a game so even at a .97 fielding clip (which is awful) they make an error once every 8 games or so. Similarly at third they only have 3-4 plays a game. At first base you close out nearly 1/3 of all outs so a .990 rate (awful for a 1B) is an error error every 12 games. If someone fielded at a .98 clip at 1B they'd have an error a week or worse.

Good stuff

Also a boot or bobble by a infielder can be made up by a good recovery and hard throw. You boot or bobble a throw at 1B and that's it. No room for error.

Mancini wasn't even considered a good 1B either. I am a fan of a really good defensive 1B. We just don't have one as an option. I'd love it if we could find a way to get Tre Morgan from Tampa Bay. LSU fans may remember him from last year's run but he's a stud defensive 1B. Will not be an elite bat but could be a Keith Hernandez lite type of player.
