I am not disagreeing with your take, but I can guarantee you by the time the ball has reached that spot it maybe going around 50 MPH tops. EV of 107 does not hold. a 100 MPH would close to deadly.

Good God is he really THAT bad? That makes Jose Abreu look like Ted Williams.

I feel like any one if us could get lucky taking blind hacks and hit .076.

He's got my vote!!

Abreu was worse. At one point. I think he got to 0.071?

ETA. He was at 0.058 early, ticked up and then fell back to 0.073 before getting sent to Florida to get a tan.

Maybe I am totally off, but man, I just cannot really believe that Espada is that stupid to bring Abreu back and plug him into the line up without some serious pressure from the top.

I mean, really, is he that stupid, stubborn? There just is no way. is there?

Maldy laughing all the way to the bank and good for him. He's managed to make around $20,000,000 the last 5 seasons of his career. He's making $320k a month this season and another $250k when his team option is likely voided next year

It was all a pre-arranged agreement between Abreu's camp and the Astros.

That's the only explanation.

Yea, I agree. There is no way a first year manager would dot that, it is would be suicide. This smells like a Crane/Bagwell special to me.

Are they just trying to get Abreu some value to trade him back to the W Sox's.

He's toast in Houston, that is pretty obvious.

Espada has 100% of the say on lineup construction, rotation and bullpen usage.

That said, he and Dana Brown are very close and if Dana wants something a certain way, it wouldn't surprise me if Joe gave in. They work well together unlike Dusty and Dana.

It's possible Crane is stepping in but I don't know for sure. Bagwell has nothing to do with it. I'll keep trying to put that rumor to bed lol

Now, I don't know whose call it was for Abreu to get as many starts as he has. It's funny because I was told adamantly leading up to his return that he wasn't going to come in and start right away. That tells me there's a disconnect somewhere.

Edit: Yes, I can confirm the above that his return to the roster was pre-arranged. Playing time was never guaranteed though.

yes, $14 MM for MadBum to sit on the couch this year

and as bad as the Abreu situation is for the Astros...

at least he's not Kris Bryant with the Rockies -- what a disaster

there's DFA talk with over $100 MM still left on his contract (thru 2028)

He's the comp that worries me about Bregman. 3B on the wrong side of 30 that never really hit the ball hard consistently.

They should cut Bryant and give Bregman his retirement plan, I mean sign him to a 5 year deal.

If we do explore trading Tucker, I wonder if Royce Lewis could be a target. He's hurt a lot but the talent is next level. The Twins might be interested in Bregman for a playoff run this year as a more likely candidate to stay healthy and then can let Brooks Lee take over next year. They also have a lot of injury prone guys (Lewis, Buxton, Correa, Larnach), so they may in general be looking to move on from some of those guys. We are maybe a little better positioned to fade Lewis' injury concerns with Mauricio. Possible trade:

Tucker
Bregman
Pressly
Bunch of Cash

For

Royce Lewis
Emmanuel Rodriguez
Zebby Matthews

He's a great player, but his past with injuries is a big red flag for me. I would look elsewhere.

Too bad he's not a good first basemen according to some

I never said he wasn't a good first baseman. I simply repeated what I heard that he still needed some work. He certainly has the athleticism. A leaping catch is great but my understanding is it's more about the footwork, etc that he's working on.

I'd be curious to hear a professional coach's opinion on how far behind Jon he is in terms of defense
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

I love Jon's story. He should be damn proud of how he was able to come back and contribute. But man, if Joey is even close to where Jon is in terms of defense, there is zero reason Jon should be on the roster right now.

I still think he's better than the current two options with more upside. Also wasn't calling you out… was calling out the organization more than anything

Is it safe to assume Loperfido becoming our first baseman of the future is a priority over him being more of a utility guy which I've heard him described as?
tjack16

Even if Loperfido is let's say a below average first basemen with not great footwork. How many games would that really cost us if he's also hitting let's say over .260 with pop?

We've heard Dubon isn't great at first but the times he's stepped in it's almost like no difference. I'd take slight below average defense but good offense over below average at both aspects (Abreu and Singleton) any day

If I was a betting man, I would bet the team looks for a 1B via trade or free agency, so Loperfido can stay in the utility role. He will need some more time to show if he's an everyday player, or not.

In my opinion.

I'm not sure the plan is for him to stick at first base long term. It's possible. I believe they're trying to expand their options moving forward. The Astros, more than most other teams, really try to give their prospects opportunities to learn other positions to become more versatile.

Singleton deserves the roster spot over Abreu, IMHO.

Can any of the stat gurus provide defensive numbers on Jon? Probably a pretty small sample size for those but I'm curious.

Based on the eye test Jon seems like he's a damn good defensive 1Bman especially for as large as he is. Dude can stretch and pick em for sure.

We're 5-7 against the gauntlet that is the AL Central so far which might actually be an improvement over the last couple years.

He's quite bad. Think you are just used to seeing Abreu (who is in fact worse than bad).

Here is how statcast ranks our 1B. 91 players have paid at least 10 innings at the position. Abreu ranks 87th, Singleton 85th, and Dubon 65th (only 16.2 Inn)

This doesn't factor in "scoops". I haven't reached on the methodology on this, but here is how the rank in Scp. Same 91 players - Singleton with 7 (tied in 7th), Abreu with 1 (tied in 41st), and Dubon with 0 (tied in last / 60th).

Both our 1B are slow and don't cover much ground / make extraordinary plays, but at least Singleton cleans up throws.
