Good luck finding our next job that pays a 24-year-old $746,000 a year.

Professional gambler probably isn't it based on "He won just 4.3% of his wagers, according to the league"

How do you only win 4% of your wagers...was every bet he made a ridiculous parlay?

I wonder how common this crap will become. I mean everyone growing up watching baseball, or sports in general, today is being inundated with gambling ads.

Then all the popular social media influencers are in it too.

Not at all defending them. Just think this we're gonna see more and more of this as it becomes more common in the general public

I would imagine parlays or super longshots with big payouts. And he kept going to make up what he lost.

MLB said that Marcano did not appear in any of the games in which he placed bets and that all of his Pirates-related bets came after he suffered a season-ending knee injury on July 24, 2023. It found that Marcano lost all of his Pirates-related parlays and won just 4.3% of his MLB bets overall.

I mean his punishment should be he has to keep betting on baseball.

So many new bettors fall for the parlay trap and get enamored by the payout. If he was only doing 4 or 5 leg parlays, that 4% hit rate is actually pretty believable.

Maybe I'm a pessimist, but this reeks of MLB sending a warning to any legit players who are gambling.

Step 1: Shohei's trainer takes the bullet from Shohei
Step 2: MLB says it's going to crack down on gambling
Step 3: MLB bans 4 nobodies for gambling
Step 4: Guys who are good players who are also gambling figure out a new system to go through.

Assuming each leg was roughly 50/50, a 4 leg parlay only has a 6.25% success probability and a 5 leg only 3.125%

Man I really hope no one on the Astros has anything to deal with gambling or gambling related activities.

I think that this has probably been going on forever, but with legitimate gambling sites, it seems that it is much easier for them to be caught.

No idea how accurate baseball savant's 3d pitch chart is, but they actually showed bregmans other strike out looking as catching the zone. The orange ball in the bottom left of the zone. Basically a perfect pitch.

Savant shows 32 called strikes on pitches outside of the zone. He's tied for 4th in the league. The next closed is Yordan & Pena with 22 each, tied in 38th.

As a team we'd tied in 9th with 194.

And he purposefully bet against the Astros...it all makes sense now. Well, even if it doesn't, I think a 2 year ban is in order.

I find it fascinating that none of the MLB reports want to talk about the suspension of David Fletcher, former LAA, friend of Shohei, currently with Atlanta. He was named as a client of the Shohei interpreter bookie. He's suspended now while it's being investigated.

That's a medium sized name.

It's absolutely a warning, and honestly, for good reason.

The game already has a sentiment about it that the umps are for certain teams and give certain bias/advantages to those teams. So there are already some integrity questions around your game at that point.

You cannot also have players betting on games become a common thing, because if it does come out a player bet a game and it DID impact the outcome of their game, integrity is completely shot. Think the black sox.

MLB isn't alone in this. NFL when through this same deal last year. NCAA too. NBA did this past season too.

Apparently, each generation of players needs a reminder because the punishment of Pete Rose (whether you believe fair or not) isn't a deterrent to guys in the mid-20's early 30's.

I don't have time now, but I've been wondering the percentage the Astros see offspeed and pitches with movement as compared to the rest of the league. I'm wondering if the percent a team sees offspeed and how they are ranked would field a similar list to the teams who've had more balls called strikes than others.

Working theory would be since offspeed and pitches with movement are harder for the hitter to judge, they would also be harder for the umpire to judge, therefore leading to more missed calls.

I worked at Rice University in 1997 when Fresno State's men's basketball team got caught point shaving ( they were both in the WAC at the time). It was really fascinating to see how they did it, and for like $500 a game.

Michael Jordan didn't just retire for 2 years to try and hit curveballs in the prime of his career because he wanted to.

All I know is that if anyone on Mike Fiers' team is gambling, they better watch the F out, because that rat will run straight to Manfred's office to snitch.

I don't bet, but betting to just double your money on a straight up bet might offer the highest likelihood to make money long term, but it doesn't seem nearly as exciting as a 10x or 20x payout that a parlay offers. I would think cashing a $1000 tickets is much more energizing than cashing in 10 $100 tickets.

I think betting is legal in the Domincan Republic...actually it doesn't matter, I'd like to see him rat the wrong player out and earn a "Domincan" neck tie.

While this is good in a normal year, it will need to improve dramatically if we hope to turn it around this year and dig out of this hole. Need to play something like .750 ball against the "bad" teams.
yes, the Astros need sweeps -- at least 3 of them in June

ideally starting with the Cardinals

Seattle (34-27) is suddenly 7 games over .500 -- with a 4-game series vs. the horrible White Sox (15-45) next week
