Can anybody pinpoint when our plate approach became super aggressive, first-pitch swing heavy? Maybe I'm misremembering, but 2017-2019 we worked counts, ran SP PC early to get to the BP, and usually did the most significant damage against those weaker BP arms.

Farmer's gonna come along and point out his OPS on first pitch swings, which is fine WHEN IT WORKS OUT. When it doesn't, not only are you giving away the out but the opportunity to make the pitcher work harder longer.

WIth no data to back it up, it happened slowly as guys like Correa, Gurriel, and Brantley left. Correa struck out 100 times a year but he wasn't chasing a lot of BS. Yuli, even when he royally sucked in '22, only struck out 73 times in 584 plate appearances, and Brantley hardly struck out at all.

Those 3 guys always seemed to be of the opinion that they were going to get comfortable at the plate and be there a while until they got a pitch to hit. Like there was no big hurry to jump on a pitch unless they really liked it, because you feel like the longer the AB goes on, the more likely the pitcher is to eff up.

Maybe it's the sped-up part of the game that is making guys anxious now, but we don't have very many hitters who seem to really understand that most pitchers are going to throw you a bunch of garbage to see what you'll swing at, and until you can prove you're going to consistently take a walk, they won't throw you hittable pitches late in the count.
