Josh Hamilton from 2012 to 2013 is probably the biggest, most rapid decline I can remember.

Went from 43 HR, 128 RBI and a .930 OPS to 21 HR, 79 RBI and a .739 OPS and that trend continued until he retired

That's probably because he went from sober to not sober overnight.

Man, I will never understand why so many of you guys hate our own players. I get being frustrated- I am too. That's an understatement. But when you would rather boo than show support for a player who is clearly lost… that's something I expect in the Bronx. Not Houston.

If it was an effort thing I would be fine with booing. But the guy works his ass off. I genuinely feel bad for him and hate that it's getting close to the end of the leash. I wish it turned out better.

You are one of my favorite posters here, and I appreciate all your contributions to this thread... that said, I understand this is really a blanket response to the overall negativity and how the season is going, and not necessarily directed at me...

First off, I don't post a ton, and I also don't enjoy the thread when it's overly negative. In previous years when we were on the run of a lifetime and in first place. We could be losing a game in the third inning and the board would be acting like we were the Oakland A's. That's not a fun environment to me - but that's the nature of message boards and the internet... if you really want to go and look - the majority of my posts aren't what I would consider toxic - but you'd probably just have to take my word on it.


I don't hate our players. I love most of them, but at the end of the day, these are professional athletes. The majority of them look at this strictly as a job and the Houston Astros are their employer. Sure you have guys like Altuve and Biggio and plenty of others that ingrain themselves to the city for their contributions both on and off the field - and that's why they go down as legends and get their numbers retired. Those types of athletes are special and it's why they are beloved and treated as such...

But Jose Abreu has been an Astro for about a year and a half. He is receiving a very large per-year contract to play a game. In that short amount of time, he has proven to be one of - if not the worst contract signing - in the franchise's history. I don't fault Jose for getting that contract (I do fault our front office a bit - even though I was just as excited as everyone else). But the facts are he is failing at an all-time epic pace, and putting the team that I love in a huge predicament.

I am sure he is a good guy... I am sure he feels bad and is working his hardest to try and correct it... but I'm not going to apologize for having no affinity to a guy who has become a giant hindrance to my favorite sports team. And at this point it looks pretty obvious that he no longer belongs in the league... instead, he is forced to play because we pay him so much, we don't have any other viable options due to his contract... and oh yeah, the back of his baseball card.

You will never hear me criticize Bregman or Chas for slumping, players that I do have an emotional connection to... and I wouldn't care if he went 0-100 starting tomorrow... I will never say a single negative thing about Jose Altuve. But Jose Abreu? Yeah sorry, I don't care. He should've stayed in Chicago if he knew his back was shot and he was at the end of his career... but he took the money. Can't blame him... but I'm not going to e-pat him on the back to work his way out of it. And he's flat-out lucky he signed with Houston and not Boston, New York or Philly... you think this message board is bad?

As for my comment on booing him. It was a throwaway comment on a message board in direct response to a previous post and the overall intent was levity towards a frustrating situation... there's a lot worse said. But I do understand where you are coming from.


TL/DR: I don't hate our players and I understand the negativity is exhausting and makes this thread not fun. I like texasaggie2015, Abreu can **** off - I don't care

Let's look at the silver lining in Jose Abreu's abysmal stats this season. He's scored runs on 6 of the 9 times he's been on base. Pretty damn good clip! Clearly he's excellent at running the bases and inspiring the hitters behind him. Altuve is only 16/44.

I can't imagine why an aging player for LAD in 2018 would have fallen off a cliff for another team in 2019. What could possibly have happened to him?

I'm not sure I'd even consider him aging. He was 33 in 2018 and 34 in 2019. But I get your point.

When you're feeling down, just look at the White Sox in the standings. 3-19 and they've been outscored by SEVENTY EIGHT RUNS. That's a difference of 3.5 runs per game. They've given up 123 runs (the Astros have given up 124) and scored only 45. That's is just barely 2 runs per game. The second lowest total is the A's and they have 65.

So let's start the watch. The worst run differential in MLB history is -349 by the 1932 Boston Red Sox.

The White Sox are on pace to get outscored by 574 runs. They're already 13 games out of first. Their team batting average is .188.

The Astros offense is elite this season but for the lack of timely hitting with RISP.

We can point to 1B but Bregman and sadly Diaz haven't helped. Otherwise this team is top or 2nd in hits and total bases. But 13th in RBIs.

The pitching is just killer. 2nd to worst in team ERA. Sure with all the pitchers on the 15 or 600 day you'd expect some weakness but it's the back end of the bullpen that's killed this team. Some competence there and this team would be around 11-12 or 12-11, not great but manageable.

I get respect, whatever but drop 1B to 9th until someone claws their way out of it or Crane is forced to make a business decision.

Diaz is a 25-year-old catcher on pace to hit 21 HR and bat .289 for the season. Those two numbers would put him among the top 3-4 catching seasons by an Astro ever.

I've seen the astros play 2 series at Wrigley and lose 5 out of 6. But you can't beat that environment on a sunny day. It's like being in a postcard. Plus I told a kid on his birthday that having Scott Sevais as his favorite player was terrible.

Both Wrigley and Fenway feel like home because you know them so well as a.baseball fan. It's like going to new York city for the first time. It's amazing but you've seen it in so many movies and tv shows that you kind of feel like you know the place.

That's fine. He's also in his first season as a regular starter and probably under quite a bit of pressure since the guy hitting in front of him who's making $28M to drive in runs isn't doing it and it continues falls on him to deliver. Wouldn't it be nice for the vet to take some of that pressure off of him?

I didn't really think so. Even if we just play .500 ball between now and end of May we have a 30% chance of making the playoffs. Thats based strictly on the data.

My bigger concern is whether the vets stay engaged and injuries, which I don't think a model can predict. Bregman is worried about his next contract so a rough early start may last longer than usual. JV is 41 and wants to win. Framber is a notorious headcase. We have had a lot of pitching injuries but none with position players.

Bregman specifically you may want to move earlier. Dubon can at least give you what Bregman has so far. Right now you can play up the slow starter narrative to other teams but if this drags into June it could be a bad situation where he becomes a negative Nancy in the clubhouse and he's not tradeable for anything valuable. The shakeup may help (or could just as easily hurt if players start wondering if they are next).

it's either press now, or wait until your 15 games back in July like the current pace suggests. I'd rather press now like Farmer says before its too late.
